Great WP, Barry
Eric JB is right.
I'm reading for the moment 'Key to the Bulge, The: The Battle for Losheimergraben
by Stephen M. Rusiecki ' and his regiment suffered quite some heavy casualties that first day, mainly because of the inexperience of a lot of soldiers.
It seemed that they attacked in 'Russian style (shooting from the hip and assaulting in big masses) because of the lack of proper infantery training.
Because of that, the more experienced officers needed to join there soldiers in the spearhead of the attacks, which resulted offcourse in a lot of casulaties of officers.

This is a very nice and historic WP! And of course, as you mentioned Barry, part of the fighting he was involved in contributed to the delays of KG Peiper's advance, which bought time for the Americans and ultimately contributed to the defeat of KG Peiper and the Ardennes Offensive overall.
I also like the nice Trachten jacket the young Bavarian is wearing in his photo!
Best,
Greg
