Wehrpass to a DAK, Normandy and Festung Lorient veteran

Thought I'd share this interesting Wehrpass to a Beobachter who saw action in some of the most interesting theatres of war. Andreas Höveler served with Beobachtungs-Abteilung 11 in the early parts of the African campaign, the battles for Tobruk and Gazala, until in June 1942 he was transported back to the Heimat and even temporarily released from service. Interestingly, Ian has posted the Soldbuch and photos of his direct commander, Hauptmann Keerl, in this thread. Another interesting detail is that Höveler was a technical drawer in civilian life and in the military - amongst other functions - was thus deployed as a Gefechtszeichner, drawing the African battlefields in his observer unit.

Höveler's luck was over in March 1943 when he was called up again to serve with Artillerie-Regiment 265, part of the 265. Infanterie-Division in Normandy. There, he would become involved in the fighting following D-Day, but was able to escape with his comrades to the Festung Lorient and ended the war there with the final surrender of the fortress on 10th (!) of May 1945, two days after the official end of the war.
During his service, Höveler was awarded with the deutsch-italienische Erinnerungsmedaille, the Afrikakorps cufftitle, and the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse awarded in the Festung Lorient.

The KVK2 award document was signed by General Wilhelm Fahrmbacher, commander of the XXV. Armeekorps in Lorient, Ritterkreuzträger and DKiS winner. Interestingly, it has a typed remark on the back that the actual award and ribbon could not be awarded due to a lack of material in the surrounded Festung.

And last, Ausweis for Höveler with proof of his unit, used in Festung Lorient, and another proof that he had spent money for the 'Lorient-Unterstützungskasse'.

Interesting. I like the award doc and the particular mention on the back.
I have same typ of metion for a "Festung Marseille" Lw member who received EK 2 during the last days of fights in the city of Marseille in august 44.
Note that he never went to Normandy but stayed in Britany all the time. Only parts of 265.ID were sent to Normandy. But all the Artillerie Regiment 265 stayed around Lorient where it was stationned since 1943 in order to protect the Festung.

                    Wehrpass

                    Very interesting stuff Tim DC.
I'll have to get around to posting my Dad's Wehrpass. Last entry shows him as missing in action in Romania on 26-8-44 as part of the 2-battalion-Fallschirmjager Brandenburg.

                      Tim,

Nice Wehrpass. Here is a Wehrpass battle list for a DAK supply guy that is similar to your guys only in more detail. Thought you might like to see it, sorry the scan is a little blurry.

                        Thanks Jared, interesting indeed.
Peter, please do post your father's Wehrpass in another thread; I'm sure many here will look forward to see one to that special unit.
