Hello,
In an issue of "Der Freiwillige" from December 2007, there is a detailed article entitiled "Du bist nicht vergessen - SS - Rottenführer Karl Müller vom SS-Wehrgeologenbataillon".
Müller was with 3. SS-Wehrgeologen, Müller was killed by partisan in Paris on 20. August 1944.
In the article, there are quite a few interesting fotos of the Wehrpass, of course, but also of the burial ceremony - just like your fotos!
Might want to take a look!
Erich

Great Soldbuch, a true piece of history. The SS Wehr-Geo-Btl(mot.) 500 is quite an interesting, as well as mysterious unit. As of now the best reference work is the one written by Valente, which focuses mainly on its activity in Italy.
I have recently had the luck of meeting a veteran of the Battalion, an Italian who volunteered for the SS after the Italian Armistice. I have interviewed him and I am going to publish it in the future. A very interesting story.
Cheers, Elia

Hell
I have a News info
I round a signature in the doldbuch Thatcher be longs to Alfred Reicherstorfer
The date of the stamp is 30/04/1945
[/url]
Apparently the bataillon is in italy at the Time
Here the information
According to my notes (source: Sammlung Vopersal, N 756, vol. no. 297) a SS-Wehrgeologen unit (SS-Wehrgeologen-Bataillon (mot) 500) was built in Hamburg-Langenhorn in 1941/42.
In Summer 1943 a Coy was sent to Italy (area of Reggio Emilia). On March 16 1944 the whole unit (3 Coys) was transferred to France (Bretagne) to build coastal defences (Hindernisbau), preparations for flooding (Vorbereitungen für Überflutung) and: (probably not an adequate translation ) "sismographic reconnoitering of the explosions of V 1 bombardment" (seismographische Ortung des V1 Beschusses). Refitting in Holland (Hengelo) and transfer to Italy (4 Coys) on September 15 1944.
Klietmann, who used thie same sources for the Wehrgeologen chapter his book (Die Waffen-SS, p. 412), confirms the information above:
construction of "Vorstrandhindernisse" in Bretagne, "Stauungen" in preparation of the invasion, and "Ortungen für das LXXIV. A.K. und das LXV. A.K. im Rahmen der Vorbereitungen für den V1 Beschuß Londons ... und Meß-Stellungen" southwest of Rouen, near Amiens, Arras, Hesdon and Cap Gris-Nez.
In Italy it had to construct a sector of the "Blaue Linie" under Kommandostab Voralpen. The area it was deployed was the Veneto and Trentino regions, south of Bolzano: Schio, Monte Pasubio, Adige Valley south of Rovereto, Monte Baldo, Monte Altissimo, Lake Garda.
After Italy's collapse in Sep 1943 the Bn recruited some 200 Italians volunteers (5 were Officers) in the Sandbostel POW Camp. The Bn was used for construction works in the Italian Alps and had several clashes with partisans.
In April 1944 SS-Wehrgeologen-Bataillon (mot) 500 had a strenght of 12 Officers, 50 NCOs, 580 Men. Armament: 9 sMG, 18 lMG, 6 mittl.Gr.Werfer, 60 MPi, 450 Rifles. In May, after surrender, it had lost 1 Officer and 100 Men.
All in all we can say it was an highly specialized multi task engineer unit, which ended up building coastal and mountain defenses.
Officers were academically educated specialists, as you can see in the long list of Doktors who served in it:
1st Coy (Hstf. Dr. Heinzelmann) was in Ala, 2nd (Hstf. Dr. Fritz Wachsmuth) in Pasubio, 3rd (Hstf. Dr. Wolfgang Diezemann) in Brentanico (Monte Altissimo), 4th (Ostf. Dr. Hans Robitsch) in Torbole on the Lake Garda and in Staro. The Bn CP (CO Dr. Rolf Höhne) was in Volano, later Folgaria. On May 2 1945 it retreated to the area of Kaltern, Kaltiner See, Tramin, Kurtatsch and surrendered to the 88th US ID on May 14 1945.
Officer roster (as in the cited source N 756/297):
Cdr. Dr. Rolf Höhne
Adj. Dr. Joos
Dr. Robitsch
Dr. Herzig
IVa Alfred Reicherstorfer
TFK 1 Hans Koeller
Dio Greisiger
Coy. Cdrs:

Prof. Gustav Rick
Dr. Fritz Wasmuth
Dr. Heinzelmann

hello
for those that his interest here is a new interesting information
" on the 17th of May the SS-Wehrgeologen-Battalion (word) is congratulated by Rommel himself for the work on the defenses of the beach in Brittany, and he accords his men an accordion in satisfaction.
The battalion of geologists of the SS are sent on the coast of KVU Lamballe
The SS-Wehrgeologen-Battalion is in fact a military engineering unit specializing in the location of the appropriate areas for the construction of defensive structures, but also in the improvement of the implementation of mining and sabotage of roads.
On March 16, 1944, three companies were transferred from Hamburg to France, bound for Brittany and Normandy, in order to prepare the coastal defenses in anticipation of the invasion. In addition to studying the details of defensive countermeasures such as flooding in the hinterland, the SS geologists are also very active in other areas. They carry out seismic surveys and Are preparing assessments for the launch of the V1 bombs, the first on June 13, 1944, in the LXXIV and LXV.Korps in northern France, in the areas of Rouen, Amiens, Arras, Hesdin and Cape Town Gris-Nez in the Pas-de-Calais"
