        Wow! That's awesome! So he made it out of Tunisia - must have been wounded and evacuated, right? This is great info. Thanks also to Fred for providing that extra background - the puzzle has finally come together, thanks to you all.

          Doug, if you have D-215 by Weber, you will see that he was told in December 1942 that 334.ID was going to Tunisia and that they would be part of a 5-7 division (including 3 SS divisions) thrust towards Algiers. (Remember this is before the full scale of the Stalingrad debacle unfolded to everyone, so at least some German planners thought they would be have more divisions for Africa).

          This explains why 334.ID needed to be motorized and the utility of having a mountain regiment handy - the mountains were even bigger in Algeria! Such a force would be needed to bypass any blocked coastal road.
