Denazifications is not a problem for me, sometime it's even positive because I can down the price a bit
Much worst is when the feldpost numbers on the stamps are obscured: this makes very hard to reconstruct the career of the owner

What make a Soldbuch desirable, that is the million dollar question..........

All depends of what you collect, an specific unit of award can make a second replacement one atractive to one collector meanwhile to other is worthless.

Ian told a true thing, when you open one and feel something you are lost, normally you end buying it and sometimes you keep it beyond racional thoughts.

Sometimes circunstances make you take some pieces normally you don't take, all depends.

I think is a matter of collecting interest and the moment.

Its hard to say that i collect only a specific type of Soldbuch.
I tried that, but failed. I keep buying Soldbücher that fall outside my main interrest and my standarts.

If a soldbuch has a story, unit or battle-connection that i like, then i might buy it.
Medals come second for me. Ofcourse its nice if a soldier has a bunch of medals.
But i rather have a Soldbuch with no medals and a good connection to a battle then one with medals and no connection to any battle/area that i like.

As Paulus_Gun said, a Zweitschrift hasn't gone 'all the way'.
I rather have first-issue Soldbücher. But a Zweitschrift can be very nice.
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

To answer your question Jason, yes. It's just as desirable in case you know the veteran and his story. I wouldn't have any problems if it was a zweitschrift oder dreischrift. You should be honoured and happy that they offered it to you.

I was in contact with a high awarded zug und abteilung panzer commander who had a zweitschrift soldbuch. He fought near my village during MG and he told me the reason why he got his zweitschrift. For me it doesn't come any better because i have a group from a soldier who fought under him. He even signed his nahkampftagelist.

For myself, I only have a single 'Zweitschrifft' issue Soldbuch in my collection.

The holder was a Luftwaffe Bordfunker who trained as a Flugzeugfuhrer is the later stages of the war. The reasons I picked it up was firstly because of the awards; he received the DKiG, Ehrenpokal and FFS mit Anhanger. The Soldbuch itself is not full of entries, and some pages are blank however, there is a very nice portrait photo attached.

The deciding factor was the fact that although the Soldbuch started in May-1944, there was a significant amount of published information on the original owner available starting with his actions in the Battle of Britain, and consequently I will be able to put a detailed research piece together as a result.

As a Zweitschrifft issue, I was able to purchase the Soldbuch for considerably less that if it had been an initial issue, and facing reality, the original issue Soldbuch for this man would of been far more expensive to purchase.

So, as alluded to already, there are plus and minus factors with a 'Zweitschrifft' issue Soldbuch and at the end of the day as long as the collector is happy with his purchase then that is all that matters.

            Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

Richard you are dead right there my friend, I'm sure my Zweitschrift soldbuch
would have been way out of my price range if it was the original issue, so I am very happy with my purchase.

Update: a grandson of the veteran has appeared from nowhere and expressed an interest in his Opa's Soldbuch, so it appears I won't be getting it. I'm happy if he's going to keep it in the family and treasure it, but I have a gnawing feeling that he won't. I hope my gut is wrong.
