    D-Day Soldbuch PoW - Combat 82nd AB

Seeing as it is 70 years + since the last entry was made in this Soldbuch, and I have just found it again! I thought I would share it...pretty much unresearched as such and I am doing it now.

The Soldbuch was issued to Jäger Alfred Negebauer on 26.2.1943 as a member of Jäger Ersatz Bataillon 28 in Troppau, then 8 (M.G.) Kp./Reserve Jäger Bataillon 28 in Castres, southwest France. Part of Reserve Grenadier Regiment 215 (B), 165 Reserve Division.

1.5.1943 this unit formed 12 (M.G.) Kp./Grenadier Regiment 867 of 355 Infanterie Division, June-August 1943 fighting in the Crimea. 26.8.43 he was wounded by shell splinters and evacuated to Reserve Teil Lazarett Olmütz. After recovery he was transferred to Genesenden Kp./Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 238 in Konstanz and recovery leave.

January 1944 to the newly formed Grenadier Regiment 1050 of 77 Infanterie Division sent to France assigned with the task of defending Caen. However Rommel was not satisfied that the Division up to this task so replaced it with 21 Panzer Division and sent 77 to a less threatened area of Saint Malo-Saint Brieuc sector in Brittany.

The 77th was placed on alert on D-day but Hgr. B delayed its move because of erroneous reports of Allied paratroop landings in Brittany. On the morning of 7.6.1944, however, Rommel ordered that it be used to reinforce Kampfgruppe Schlieben which had been assigned the task of holding the southern approaches to Cherbourg. The division started its move late (15:00) but then marched as rapidly as could be expected since it had virtually no motorised transport and was under constant harassment by Allied fighter bombers. Friedrich Dollmann Kdr. 7 Armee was very much concerned that it would not arrive in time to prevent the collapse of Generalmajor Wilhelm von Schlieben's line. But its vanguard arrived at teh front on the 10th and much of the division was in position the following day, defending in the hedgerow country on both sides of the Merderet River. Here it fought very well, checking much stronger elements of the US VII Corps and preventing the Americans from outflanking Montebourg, a major junction on the road to Cherbourg. A much relieved Dollmann signaled Rommel on the 11th that he was satisfied that the situation was well in hand in this sector.

Dollmann's relief was short lived. South of the 77th was Pz.Ers.Abt.100 which consisted of non German personnel, broke and ran at its first contact with the Americans. General Collins quickly committed the US 9th Infantry and 82nd Airborne divisions to the attack along the Pont-l'Abbé - Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte road, taking full advantage of the hold in the German line. At 05:05 on the 18th, his spearheads reached the sea near Barneville, isolating Kampfgruppe Schlieben in the northern part of the Cotentin Peninsula.

The division remained close to the coast during July and at the beginning of August most of it retreated into St. Malo, where it went into captivity when the town fell in mid-August. Probably elements of the division never went to St. Malo, since according to a OKH document dated 16 October 1944, the division was estimated to have a strength of 3 000 on 1st September. Nevertheless it was disbanded on the 15th

The only award mentioned is the Wound Badge in Black awarded for one wound received on 26.8.1943.

Clearly he was entitled to at least the Infantry Assault Badge also as there are three entries for fighting in France ending in la Barneville.

I must admit I can not read the first place on 14.6.1944

The unit he was recruited in, Res.Jäg.Btl.28 is one of the units I am highly interested in as in August 1944 at the time of the southern France invasion, it was in the Nice area. I was exchanging emails with a relative of a KIA from the battalion just today. Most of the recruits in this unit were "non German".

On D-Day the division was located near St. Malo11 and the following day it was decided to send 77. Inf.Div. to Normandy as soon as it could be relieved by 5. Fallsch.Div12. Motorized parts of the division had reached a position east of Granville 8 June13 and two days later elements of the division had reached Valognes, being comitted on both sides of the Merderet, while most of the division was in the area north of Coutances.

Sometimes it has been assumed that the 77. Inf.Div. was largely cut off when US forces reached the western coast of the Cotentin peninsula and that small elements of the 77. Inf.Div. succeed to break out southwards.

Actually only parts of the division were ever comitted that far north. Two battalions were committed north of Utah area, while one battalion was sent to the fortress area around Cherbourg. Two of these battalions were subsequently transferred to St. Sauveur. About 1 200 men that were cut of by the American advance broke out to the south, led by the commander of Inf.Rgt. 1049. Another 70 men remained in the Cherbourg area.

One battalion, the I./Gren.Rgt. 1050, remained in St. Malo and was later sent to join the division. On 17 June it had passed Avranches.

Until 24 June losses amounted to (excluding parts in Cherbourg):

                      34 % of infantry
                      20 % of artillery personell
                      22 % of engineer personell
                      23 % of antitank personell

Given these percentages it seems that the division had lost 1 800 - 2 000 men 6 - 24 June.

                      --------

I hopefully will find the town/village listed for 14th

                      /Ian

                          Ian,
Great document set! Thanks for showing it. I believe the first Kampftage is Renouf, short for la Croix Renouf which is about 2 Km east of la Bonneville.
