    'Ungueltig' stamp on Soldbuch

Can anyone tell me why a Soldbuch would be stamped with an 'Ungueltig' -(Void) cross on the first 3 pages of this Soldbuch

    Many thanks

Ungültig of course means the document is invalid, can be numerous reasons but in your case it appears to have Neuausgestellt with a date written underneath on the top of page 1. Which means he was issued a new Soldbuch and this one of course was of no use. Also the stamps would stop anyone else using it as an ID for the wrong reasons.

Regulations state when a new Soldbuch is issued, the old Soldbuch should have a red X on the cover and first page ( with a signed notation from the commander) but this works as well.

The red X was used on the Cover and page one of MIA, KIA, Missing and demoted soldier's Soldbücher. Later regulations say to have this done with all returned Soldbücher except those being discharged (in case they get call back). However, Nick you are partially right. All those later regs. refer back to the Heeres Mitteilung 1941, page 593, #1114. That does say to only put a diagonal line on page one with Commander's notation and unit stamp on those Soldbücher that have been replaced and after all the pertinent information was copied, to hold them for three months before returning them to the soldier's Wehrkommando or Werhmeldeamt.
