Soldbuch Fw JOOST Panzer-Rgt.100 (21.Pz.Div. WIA Normandy)

Hi Guys. Got last Week this nice SB. Quite complicated Carreer, that I would summarize as follows for the Period which interest me (1944) : Felwebel Joost was depending from A.O.K.17 in Russia and was sent to the Commanding "Stab" from the Kraftfahrtruppe in France. He seems to me he transited to his replacement Depot in Neuruppin (Panzer-Ers.Abt.5) and was qualified as a "Commandant", which means to me "Panzerkommandant", but your Comments are appreciated about that... Anyway, it was decided he had to join the "new" Pz.Rgt.100 created in Versailles / Paris on Jan.10th 43. Look at the Mention on the attached Paper "Für Pz.Rgt.100". He then joined the 2nd company (2./Pz.Rgt.100, part of the famous 21.Pz.Div.(neu). More détails later. Lionel. <p><img src="http://cdn04.trixum.de/upload2/z/Y/zYTpKr7XtqQA139133461253P1683.jpg"></p>

On June 29th 1944, he was severely WIA on the Normany Front. He was first handled in Kriegslazarett ?/612. As far as I know :
    1/612 : Alençon
    2/612 : Bagnoles
    3/612 : Le Mans
    4/612 : Rennes

On July 2nd, he was transferred to Kriegslaz. 2./680 : LE VESINET. July 7th : Saarburg / Lothringen (nowadays : Sarrebourg / Lorraine) and then to Germany for a long Time, he entered the Chirurg.Abt. from Schwerin-Hospital on Nov.11th 1944 !! <p><img src="http://cdn04.trixum.de/upload2/o/i/oiYGfXFjVcEI139133527724P1683.jpg"></p>

After havin recovered from severe Injuries (it seems he receivend directly the SWB....), he was then transferred to various Transport Units, for which I actually didn't made any Researches, due to Lack of Time....

ANY COMMENTS, ADDITIONS OR INFORMATIONS, ARE HIGHLY APPRECIATED !
      Tks ! Lionel. <p><img src="http://cdn04.trixum.de/upload2/J/1/J1yamIZ9fwVk139133627889P1683.jpg"></p>

Very nice Soldbuch Lionel! Plus a very nice portrait photo.
As far as I can see from the scans, it looks like Kriegslazarett 1/612.

          Excellent Pz.Rgt.100/21.Panzer-Division Soldbuch

It's quite possible that Joost was wounded prior to 29.June as that was the day he was actually admitted to the hospital and it may have been a day or more before he arrived there from where he was wounded. Impossible to say without further informatuon but either way a very, very nice and desirable early Normandy invasion front casualty ID I am sure many here would be very happy to have in their collections..... myself included

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Did he even leave the hospital before the war ended? He was still there on 3.1.45 as he was awarded the EK II by the hospital. Does he have a genesung-urlaub after the EK II date?

Yes, very nice document ! Congratulations.
I agree about 1/612 and for Kommandant. But I think we must read several things. First " Kommandant Kw. K 7,5 cm", and "Richte u. Ladeschutz Pak" and "Waffen und Gerät".

Thanks Dennis, Rob, Jeff, Christophe and Luft !!

Fully agree with You Rob, probably the Wound was received before, and without further Documents, hard to determine the exact Place this Action took Place. But a quite small Area can be determined with the existing Documentation (Forget the " Heimdal" Book from Perrigault, full with good Pics but full of historical Mistakes especially for the Lorraine Campaign)

Jeff, Walter Joost had "Sonderurlaub" from Dec.23th to Dec.28th, no further Entries concerning "Urlaub", it is the last one.... But according to the numerous Units written on page 17 as "Feldtruppenteil", it seems to me he went back to the Front. Otherwise, you would only have "ersatz" Units or "Gen.Kp." (Genesenden-Kompanie).

                    Hi all !

Interesting Soldbuch ! He did really serve in a lot of different units in the East, West and Italy.

Walter Joost served with Kraftfahrstaffel OKH 631 at the start of the war.
The task of this unit was the transport of persons and material, as well as messenger services
on behalf of the OKH Headquarter. More infos (and references) here :
                    http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/in...Abteilung-631/

The replacement unit of the Kraftfahrtsaffel 631 was the Kraftfahr-Ersatz-Abt. 3 (Rathenow),
which shows up several times among his replacement-units :
                    http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...rAbtErs3-R.htm

He must have been transferred to Stab II. Armee-Korps (which had Inf.Ers.Btl 96 as
replacement unit) and at some time in 1941 to Stab AOK 17 (because his Kr.St.R.Nr. is 396/41).
(One can only assume that he was used there as a driver as well).

For the change in the replacement unit to Inf.Ers.Btl. 514, I have no explanation.

Then it becomes really tricky, to understand the sequence of entries.
The units listed on page 17 are :
                    - HQ Militärbefehlshaber in Frankreich, Kraftfahrkompanie.
                    - 7. ??? mot. Kolonne 26
                    - 7. kleine Kraftwagen-Kolonne 93
                    - 4. Kraftfahr-Kp. Div.Nachschubtr. 93
                    - Nachschub-Kp.(mot) 93

                    These are all supply units of Div.Nachschubführer 93 (= 26. Pz.Div.).
The 26. Pz.Div. was formed from Sept. 1942 onward near, Amiens, France.
In the beginning, its supply troops were organized as :
                    - 1.-9. kl. Kw. Kol. (30 t) [he was with the 7. kl.Kw.Kol.]
                    - 10.-12. gr. Kw.Kol. f. Betriebsstoff (60 t)
                    - 1. -3. Werkstatt-Kp.(mot)
                    - Nachschub-Kp.(mot) 93

At some time in 1943, these units were reorganized :
                    - 1.-4. Kraftfahr-Kp. (90t) 93 [he was with the 4. Kraftf.Kp.]
                    - 5. Kraftfahr-Kp. (120t) 93
                    - Nachschub-Kp.(mot) 93

Therefore, he must have been with the supply units of 26. Pz.Div. before 1943 and and still some time in 1943.
Because of his low KrSt.Nr., I would assume he was with his unit from the time of formation onwards.
(The replacement unit then was again his "usual" Kraftfahr-Ersatz-Abt. 3 (Rathenow) !).
                    http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...ubtruppen%2093

Only after that, he was transferred to Pz.Ersatz-Abteilung 5, Neuruppin, where he was trained as Pz-Kommandant,
as explained already above. (There is a second entry, referring to this unit, entered on page 17, in the line starting
with D: jetzt zuständiger Ersatztruppenteil, but I cannot decipher the Standort. It would be great if anybody could
help here, perhaps that gives some clues on the timeframe).

I think the entry on page 4, starting with d) was made after all the other Feldtruppenteil-entries, simply because there
was no more place to enter it anywhere else in a readable fashion.

From Pz.Ers.Abt. 5 he was sent to his frontline unit, Pz.Rgt. 100, where he took part in the fighting at Normandy
and was probably wounded so heavily, that he had to stay in several hospitals for the remainder of the war, finally
ending up in Reseve-Lazarett VI, Schwerin.
I think Jeff mad a good point here, that he received his E.K. II, while still in hospital.
To me it seems, that his promotion to Oberfeldwebel, was entered in the Soldbuch on 12.4.45 (if I read that correctly),
while he was still in the same Reservelazarett (and possibly signed by the same Oberstabsarzt, who signed the award entry).

(After a closer inspection, I also think that his last field unit is crossed out (because it was destroyed at Falaise),
and that perhaps after that he was assigned a new (and final replacement unit) : Panzer-Ersatz-Abteilung 11, Bielefeld)
Otherwise I can make no sense of this last replacement unit entry.

I hope these explanations are not to weird. I am still trying to get more experience in understanding those sequences
of changes in field-units / replacement units, when there are no dates given. Therefore I would be glad for any
                    corrections or comments.

                    Cheers,

                    Archi

Wow.... one more time Archi, tks for the time you've spent searching Unit détails from this SB ! As you wrote, the sequences from the Unit-Entries are really complicated in this one, and to be completely honest, only the "Pz-Rgt.100" Entry was interesting to me...... I am currently working on other SB's which Units appears to me to be more exciting than the average..... Thank you very much for your Efforts, which are highly appreciated !! Lionel.
