How does this work, did they actually backdate such documents in those days? Knittel became Abteilungskommandeur on April 22, 1943, was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer on April 26 (m.W.v 24. April), 1943, and the prefix "Panzer" wasn't used before autumn 1943.

Is the 20.12.1942 entry signed by someone with an unreadable signature (the same signature shows up in the 22.8.42 entry) , then signed again by Fritz Reuß at least five months later? (Reuß signed as SS-Ustuf. and Kompaniefhr., a rank he did not have before April 20, 1943, and post he did not held before May 1943).

The date of birth intrigues me as well. My files have two entries for 9.5.1921 with "Richard J." being the best candidate: indeed born on May 9, 1921, and transferred from 2./AA LAH to Stab/AA LAH, but on 16.08.1943 as an SS-Rttf. so that's not a perfect match with these documents.

Yes, they did. Many of these Ostmedaille docs were issued in 1943, sometimes 1944, but the earlier date of issue was inserted on the certificate.
