SS KIA Wehrpass Breslau / Greece

Today I'd like to introduce a very interesting KIA Wehrpass of a SS Unterscharführer who was - amongst others - with "SS Infanterie Geschütz Ersatz Bataillon" and (after being re-named) with "SS Infanterie Geschütz Ausbildungs- und Ersatz Bataillon 1" under the command of famous KC recipient SS Obersturmbannführer Georg-Robert Besslein in Breslau.

The SS Uscha started his military career in July 1939 with "I.R. 101" and "I.R. Ers. Btl. 475" before he became part of "Polizei Regiment 3" in October 1939. Being re-named "SS Polizei Schützen Regiment 3" later he fought with both Polizei units (which were part of "4. SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division") in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, France and Russia. Therefore he was awarded with the Eastern Medal and the KVK 2nd Cl. with X.

In August 1942 he was transferred to "SS Infanterie Geschütz Ersatz Bataillon" under the command of Obersturmbannführer Besslein. Besslein took over that unit in June 1942 in Ede / Netherlands before being transferred with his unit to Breslau. He stayed at Breslau and defended it later until he got captured by the Russians on May 6th 1945.

"SS Infanterie Geschütz Ersatz Bataillon" was renamed in April 1943 in "SS Infanterie Geschütz Ausbildungs- und Ersatz Bataillon 1".

According to Wehrpass-page 26 the SS Uscha probably was transferred to the SS I.G. unit because of something we would call a "PTSD" (Posttraumatic stress disorder) today. The Wehrpass entry says that the soldier had to be transferred - if possible - to a less danger unit.

In September 1943 he was transferred again. This time to "SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 8". This unit was part of "4. SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division" - a very infamous Division because of what happened in Distomo (Greece) on June 10th 1944 (massacre of Distomo). Hard to tell if he got involved in the massacre but he was there at the time.

He fought partisans with "SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 8" in Greece from September 1943 until July 9th 1944. That was the day he got KIA in Greece and he is burried as an unknown soldier there.

    Regards
