Nice research, except this is taken from WN60..... WN62 is on the green hillside in the middle distance.

    regards,

I am still in contact with a veteran of WN 60, but that's another story.

Take the same photo in the last years.

The second photo you can see the area where the unit counterattacked.

It take some weeks but sadly I haven't time(and money but thats another story) to research all my soldbuch in this way, but sometimes when I found some time. I found most of the information in documents, books or internet and sometimes I get some help of veterans or forummembers.

          Yes, nice Soldbuch ! Congrats.
This man was wounded during the "second part" of the fights of 352.ID , northern of Saint Lô. It was not a lesser battle for the division... A the begining of july GR 916 was the strongest of the three regiments, and was the only one to be in frontline, in Villiers-Fossard - Le Mesnil Rouxelin area (north-western of St. Lô), supported by both Kpfgr. 266. ID ("Kentner") and Kpfgr. 353 ID. Parts of the Kpfgr. 266.ID (II./899) must be sent to GR 916 on 5/6 july, after heavy losses under artillery fire. Your man was perhaps one of these losses ?

Aram,As everyone has said, spectacular job retracing this man's history. Only one question: How could you possibly conclude that this man had no girlfriend?Steve

That is a very nice piece of research you have put together to bring your Soldbuch to life with regards to its original owner and his part on a very significant day in history.

I fully appreciate the amount of time, checking of sources, counter checking and general 'digging' that it takes to put these research pieces together as my spare time is spent knee deep in researching Luftwaffe document groupings.

You have achieved a fine end result however, do not be suprised that subsequent snippets of information will surface which you can add to this piece, and that is part of the joy of collecting these documents.

                Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

The evidence he was captured in the end of March 1945 you can see in the attachment.

I think he was wounded at mid-June 1944. He was in the Gruppen-Chefarzt 3/I Kriegslazarett-Abteilung 528R(OB West) on 21.06.1944 and get his VWA Schwarz on 06.07.1944. I thought the Grenadier-Regiment 916 was in the area north-east of Saint-Lô around 20 June 1944.

When I look again, he possibly could have a girlfriend but wasn't married. My fault.

Nicely done piece of research, on such an interesting period/battle of the war.

Better than watching a documentary on history channel

                            Thanks guys, for your reactions.

                            A little addition;

                            - His KVK he received on 20.04.44 was signed by Hauptmann Steneck, commander of the Stabskompanie./ 916 Grenadier Regiment.

The Stabskompanie had 4 Zugs(Signals, stabszug, pionier and aufklärungs), on D-Day each Zug was divided into 3 "Gruppe". Each Grupp(around 10 men) had his own task, most of the time send to the front against enemy breakthrough's.

I also picked up a map and some photo's of other members of the Stabskompanie, 916 Grenadier Regiment. They lived in Dungy, a hamlet south of Trevieres. The photo's were taken in Normandy between February 1944 and the last in June 1944, just a few days before D-Day. Some photo's are written on the backside with dates, soldier names and places(o.a. St. Laurent and Le mesnil Rouxelin).

"Am 6.6.1944 - 2.30 Uhr Invasion waren wir Regt. 916 in St. Laurent!"

I'm sure the man on these photo's have known Hermann Hinze. Just a nice and little addition to this Soldbuch.
