Bei den Umbettungsarbeiten in seinem ursprünglichen Grablageort konnte er nicht zweifelsfrei identifiziert werden, so dass er als ''unbekannter Soldat'' auf dem Friedhof Cassino bestattet worden ist.

Interesting the fact that most of the letters sent to the family are very similar.
The soldier died almost instantly from a shot to the head. Very lucky, he didn't suffer...

In this man's Wehrpaß, they did remove that part, durch ****** gefallen, so maybe the guy wasn't "that lucky" at all.

Thats what they generally say to indicate no suffering....I have a few worded the same.

Only once do I recall a graphic letter describing how the rifle went off accidentally after a patrol whilst in transport when the bullet passed through his hand, arm and taking the side of his head off......not what you want to read about your son!!!

I've been told by two infantry company commanders of the 357. ID that when they had to write such a letter (and some of the officer personally wrote these letter while others delegated such work to the NCOs) this was the common phrase used - whether is was true or not...to spare the family any additional grief.
