    Hello

I don't think that it was the oath.
The oath has endet after Hitlers death and for many soldier some time befor.

The soldiers were sad after 6 years of war, of starvation, homesickness and grief about death relatives and comrades and a possible war-captivity. They had many worries about the future.

They were sad about all military things and a dogtag is the last bringback they want.

    Best regards Fronti

      Hello Fronti,

Yes I quite agree with you regarding the sentiments of the soldiers at the end. Fortunately for those of us who are interested in such things that they are still to be found?

      MFG,
      Simon.

        Hello

They can still be found today.

Some of the "captivity holders" don`t let the POWs go home in army clothings and with belt buckels, dogtags, etc. after their war-captivity time.
The POW had to throw away his dogtag, belt buckle, buttons, etc, before he can leave the POW camp.
In other POW camps the POWs were registered on arrival. During this registration they had to hand over their dogtags after J2/G2 evaluating.
The "host nation" had thrown the dogtags into a foxhole after this evaluation/analysis/registration.
A friend of mine douged out such a foxhole in a former POW camp with more than 2000-3000 dogtags.

Another commonly occurring dugout are various kind of rings. (weddings rings, etc..)
The POW had 2 problems, while leaving the POW camp officially:
1.) He can`t leave the camp whith his wedding ring.
(There might be a way in a dark "cave" of his body... I think the right english word is butt)
2.) The POW won`t handover the ring to a guard.

Solution: Most of the rings from the pows were dugged into the ground by themself, because they don`t grant the rings to the guards.

        Best regards, fronti
