No he was not downgraded: Obergrenadier was the equivalent of a private, first class in the Us Army. Gefreiter was equal to corporal

Interesting he served pretty much with GD and Führerbegleit all his career. I take it he was killed in 15.9.1944?

Initially with Führerbegleitbataillon, then to Technische Stabskompanie 1 (OKH) which was later renamed Technische Stabskompanie Führerhauptquartier (TeNo).
Then back to Führerbegleit but now renamed Führer Grenadier Bataillon.
Lastly with Pz.Gren.Rgt. GD fighting in East Prussia.

No idea but the memorial cards were from the family not the military so it could of been someone not 'up' on military matters.
