    Franz Gockel soldbuch

    Hello

Franz Gockel soldbuch is own by the National ww2 museum

I have asked them but they are unwilling to answer any question about pics or his carreer (thanks for sharing, would Mr Gockel have agreed such a behaviour ?)

Does anyone know his footsteps before dday
Then when/where and with which outfit he was finally caught up in the Vosges area in France ?

    Thanks

I have a book entitled 'Omaha Beach' authored by Georges Bernage that has pictures of pages 3 and 15 of his Soldbuch. It also has a brief history on his WWII footsteps before D-Day.

I'll paraphrase it: He was called up at age 17 in 1943 for use in the Arbeitsdienst. The training lasted only 3 months, then in September '43 was sent to 'barracks' in Nijmegen as a recruit where he had a shortened basic training of 6 weeks. Franz and his comrades were sent to Normandy in October and stationed in Caen in a castle, then Bayuex, Maisons, and finally St.Laurent-sur Mer. Looks like he was sent around to various companies and battalions of the 726th Inf. Rgt. as soon as he arrived in Normandy.

There are also some nice pictures of him from Nijmegen in his field and a parade uniforms. It also details his experience on June 5th and 6th.

    Hopefully that will help you!

I have to admit that I had to do research about him as I never heard of him before.
Anyway, great what he did after the war.

        Regards
