      the first words GEN , mean "genesen" this unit is made up for reconvalescent soldiers that where formed into new untis in the rear. so reconvalescent grenadier ersatz batl.

          I would guess that it's either Gefreiter Kurt or the man's name was Kurt Gehr- the former looks to be more likely. It's very interesting, I've never seen a disc with what could be the former owner's name scratched into it. I've seen other unit code numbers, and blood group letters scratched on discs- I did see a name in pencil once...

              No Miraul, probably not. As I said, it is more likely the first part is actually 'Gefr.', so Kurt is the family name. And, since it's a complete disc, it means that this Gefreiter Kurt wasn't killed in action- or at least that his death wasn't recorded. Because the Gefreiter Kurt Gehr you found did have his death recorded, his disc would have been broken. If you didn't find this disc with any remains, it was either thrown away at the end of the war, or confiscated by whomever took him prisoner and then discarded. Matt
