I remember that well Erich because of the photos and what he is wearing as opposed to what is in the Soldbuch

Here is the alter Kubankämpfer Neuberger.

Note the Schliefen on his shoulderboards: GR 14, though this unit is not marked in his Soldbuch (or it is and I have not seen it yet....)

And though he is clearly wearing the Kubanschild and EK 1, these awards are not listed in his Soldbuch...

Really nice Soldbuch Erich. He looks every inch the Infantry Uffz. in the group snapshot.

Yes, very nice. The photos not only add to the soldbuch but really show the face of a strong soldier.

And the entries for the remaining awards - except the EK 1 and the Kubanschild: Infanterie Sturmabzeichen, Verwundetenabzeichen, EK 2. Klasse and Ostmedaille.

                            Erich,

I had forgotten what this looked like but the Soldbuch is typical for someone who was taken prison of war. A friend of mine told me this when I asked the same question about his Soldbuch.

If you look at the awards page you can see it has been folded and reattached. The reason I was told by my good friend is that he had to hand his Soldbuch in, however if you had any awards you were treated differently to those that did not (Russians treated you as a mass murderer the more awards you had!). So, he ripped the award page out and kept it elsewhere (I forget where now but in time in his tobacco tin!). Anyway he got his Soldbuch back after time and of course put the page back in.

If you check other Soldbücher, not all that uncommon for the award page to have been reattached in many Soldbuch and has been folded! Of course this was not he case with all and it depended on who and where you were captured!

With that said, I wonder if he lost the other page or were they simply never entered? The latter should have caused problems if he was wearing awards that were not entered in the Soldbuch, especially from any roaming Feldgendarmerie!!

                            /Ian
