I think that's Flieger Ersatz Abteilung 10, so an air force replacements unit.

I would lean more to thinking that stood for Stammkompanie-Fahr-Ersatz-Abteilung 10, which would be a replacement unit for drivers/transport or Supply troops. These men would be used mainly for horse-drawn supply units, but they were also used for drivers in various other units.

The other number is his personal number and the A would be his bloodgroup.

I hope this helps, congrats on your first disc!

Just for others, here is an image of the disc off Detlev's site:

This is a wonderful example of an authentic dog tag, nice stampings and wear.

          Hello

Thanks for the info guys much appreciated. The disk shows plenty of wear in the two holes where it used to hang round the guys neck by cord.

            You are welcome Darren.

Just so you know, I have a Wehrpass/dog tag for a man that was originally in a Fahr Ers. unit, but he ended up becoming part of various infanterie units, as I think many of these men did. So the disc probably has a bit more history behind it than a supply unit driver

Chris is right- it could be Fahr-Ersatz-Abteilung 10- except that I can't find it on the list of Wehrmacht units. There's a Fahr-Ersatz-Abteilung 9 and an 11, but no 10.

He's right too about how someone who started in transport could have ended up serving in a combat unit- afterall, Guy Sajer started off in a Kraftfahr unit and ended up in the Großdeutschland Regiment!

It wouldn't be a Flieger Ersatz unit as those were Bataillone, not Abteilungen. Neither could it be Füsilier, because they were Bataillone too. I can't really find any other possibilities, so I'd just guess that the list I consulted is simply incomplete.

I think it is a safe assumption that there was a 10th Abteilung.

                  There was a Fahr-Ers. Abt. 10- Wehrkreis X Neumünster.

'St.' could indeed also stand for 'Stab' (staff)- I have a number of Bataillon Stab discs abbreviated this way- although the rather high Stammrollennummer wouldn't immediately suggest this. 'Stammkompanie' is usually abbreviated 'Stm. Kp.', 'Stamm. Kp.', 'Stammk.' or similar.

                    Sorry... Only in german...

                    Fahr-Ersatz-Abteilung 10

                    1. Aufstellung:

                    * 26.8.1939 in Neumünster, Wehrkreis X; 1.10.1942 geteilt; 10.4.1943 vereinigt als Fahr-Ersatz- und
                    Ausbildungs-Abteilung 10; April 1945 mobil als Fahr-Abteilung 10.

                    2. Unterstellung:

                    Division 160, 10.6.1940 Division 190, 1.11.1944 Division 490

St could be Stammschwadron or Stab. In these Fahr-Ersatz units there are Schwadrone, in the Kraftfahr-Ersatz units there are Kompanien.
