    Oberfeldwebel Soldbuch, KIA Berlin

Here is another Soldbuch I recently acquired for Oberfeldwebel (First Sergeant) Franz Gasser. The Soldbuch was issued to Gasser on 20 January 1940 by the Stabskompanie (Headquarters Company) of the Panzertruppenschule (Armored Troop School). Gasser served with the Stab of the 3. Panzer Brigade, on the Stab of the Headquarters of Infanterie Division 33, the Stab of the 15. Panzer Division, the Lehrabteilung fuer Heeresmotorisierung (Instructional Detachment for Army Motorization) in Wuensdorf, the Werkstattzug (Maintenance Section) of the 575. Volksgrenadier-Division, and two units of the 272. Volksgrenadier-Division, Kraftfahrzeug Instandsetzungszug (mot.) 272 (Motor Vehicle Repair Section (motorized) 272) and the III. Artillerie Regiment 272:

During his service, Gasser was awarded the IVth Class Army Service Medal, E.K. II, K.V.K. II with Swords, Hungarian Bravery Medal, and the ribbon for the Ostmedaille. He last served with the Cadre Company of Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 203, which was based in Berlin-Spandau. Gasser was hospitalized in Reserve Lazarett Wuensdorf from 29 March - 17 April 1945 and was subsequently transferred to Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 203 in Berlin-Spandau, where he was involved in the Battle of Berlin. On 6 May 1945 (I believe the German War Graves website reversed the day and month), Gasser was killed, most likely while defending the base of Grenadier Bataillon 203 (the unit was based in Berlin-Spandau and this is where Gasser was buried).

Again a very interesting SB with a sad ending for one of the soldiers of one of the biggest battles of the War.
