Soldbuch 246 Volksgrenadier

HI there all,

I got my first soldbuch the other day, the cover is so worn I had to scan the lot and immediately put it in my safe deposit box. Some of the markings are (for my untrained eyes) difficult to decypher but it appears from his awards page that he was in the 246th, and coinciding with the dates of his KvK being presented, most probably in the Ardenne offensive.

Any info is welcome as I plan to create a website on my tour of the Ardenne last year. I will credit any sources obtained here (hint hint Ian) Specially need info on 246th and their movements in the Ardenne 1944.

At the moment I only have pics but will soon create a page for convenience.

I'm assuming you mean the 246th Division?

It used to be the 246th Infaterie Division, renamed VolksGrenadier in '44.

Basically the Division info provided by Chris in the above link is taken from Tessin...I will take a look and see what else I can find.

It looks to me like the unit was bounced around a bit late '44 and '45, mostly from 5 panzer armee and 7th Armee.

I couldn't tell you anything about how they faired, or how they performed - sorry.

Ian is pretty knowledgeable, so if there is any other available information, I'm sure he will dig it up!

I think most historians would not claim that 246. VG took part an active part in the Ardennes offensive, although it was in the Ardennes area Tessin is wrong (quite a common occurence where the Korps attachments are concerned) as at the start of the offensive 246. VGD was part of LXXXI Korps, 15. Armee.

15. Armee was supposed to launch it's own attacked when the first part of the Ardennes offensive was successful. As this never happened 15. Armee never laucnhed it's attack. On 26the December 246. VGD was transferred to LXVII Korps (which in turn was transferred from 5. PanzerArmee to 15. Armee) and it replaced 3. Panzergrenadier Division which was in positions facing Elsenborn Ridge on the northern shoulder of the salient.

My great-uncle served in the neighbor division the 363.Volks-Grenadier-Division, look at the card.

He fallen in those days, at the 5.12 at Broich near Jülich through a direct artillerie hit
