Leading off his awards page (EK2, IAB in Bronze, Black Wound Badge), it starts with the Hindenburg Cross for Noncombatants (Ehrenkreuz für Kriegsteilnehmer), so he was in the German military but not at the front in World War ONE. There were some border adjustments there, which may have shifted his citizenship under his feet without ever moving--

or he volunteered in BOTH wars! When was he born?

                        Good catch Rick.

I saw "Ehren...." and just glanced over it thinking in said Orden und Ehrenzeichen...

Notice he is not wearing that ribbon bar in either foto, however he it looks as if he has the Ostmedaille in the driver's license foto. Am I correct?

No doubt a very brave man.

                        Erich

I suspect he didn't wear the NCHC ribbon because

                          a) it would just make him obviously seem "older" and

                          b) it was of no great importance-- "Hi! I'm an olllllld dude who never saw any action last time."

I think it's a trick of the light with the 1941/42 East Medal "ribbon." It is way over by his armpit and not centered over his pocket, but also the darker bit closest to his armpit beyond the light upright looks like shadow to me, compared to the darkness on the other side. Maybe a pencap, or something like that?

I tend to agree about the Ehrenkreuz especially in the SS.

Old or not, Schreiber or not in the last war...he certainly 'made up for it". I certainly would be an interesting ribbon bar EK II. Klasse 1939 and Ehrenkreuz fuer Nichtkaempfer 1914-1918.

                              Hi
                              Thanks, for your replies.
This man was a member of the German minority in Denmark. He served 6 months in a Garde unit in Berlin in 1918.
Here is a photo of him on his last leave home in March 1945.
