    KIA (Ober)Leutnant grouping

    2011 started out good for me (but not for my money!).
    The month isn´t even over yet and i allready bought 6 Soldbücher and 2 Wehrpässe
    I´m not gonna show them all, but i wanted to show this grouping.
    It has all 3 things! Soldbuch-Wehrpass-Wehrstammbuch/gesundheidsbuch.
    I can´t remember the last time that i saw such a complete grouping (i mean, if you collect ID´s that is).
    Thats why i wanted to show this to you guys.

    Its a grouping to Eberhard Schleifenbaum, who was KIA as Leutnant on 10-12-1943 fighting partizans.
    He got shot in the head/neck and was promoted to Oberleutnant after his death.
    He was in the HJ, then the RAD and after that he volunteered for the Wehrmacht in 1938.

    He received:
    * Reichssportabzeichen
    * Reiterabzeichen
    * Verwundetenabzeichen Schwarz
    * Verwundetenabzeichen Silber
    * Ostmedaille
    * Allgemeines-Sturmabzeichen
    * EK II Klasse
    * EK I Klasse
    * Eisernes Dreiblatt IV Klasse (Highest Croatian order)

    And he was in the units:
    * Kavallerie-Regiment 15
    * Aufklärungs-Abteilung 169
    * Aufklärungs-Abteilung 46
    * Aufklärungs-Abteilung 106
    * Aufklärungs-Abteilung 373 (Kroat)

    I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
    Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

    Soldbuch, the picture in it is there for a very long time.
    Its the reserve Wehrpass photo i think (the same is also in the Wehrpass).

        Folded away in the back of the Soldbuch was another Soldbuch cover.
        On the inside of the folded cover is some written text, plus there was a wartime receipt for a magazine (1943) in it and a RAD photo of him.

          Here a few pictures from the albums, quality isn´t good because i photographed them.
          On the first one you can see the PPK that is also written down in his Soldbuch.
          And you can see that he is wounded.

                  I also got a question, i´ve never seen the Eisernes Dreiblatt (Iron Trefoil) before.
                  Is it rare to see this medal in a German Soldbuch?

                      The Iron Trefoil IV Class was the lowest order for this decoration and was pretty much the Croatian equivalent of the Iron Cross Second Class. It was readily awarded to German soldiers that fought alongside Croatian units or in them, as your man was.

                      Sorry, I can't help with the second part of your question.

                      All the best,
                      Jason

                        Are you sure you mean the right medal?
                        This IV klasse has been awarded only 577 times.

                          Yes, we're talking about the same medal. Indeed, you're right, sources show that this medal was only awarded 577 times, but I believe this number only pertains to Croatian soldiers, not German.

                          For work on my latest book "Croatian Legion" I was able to delve into Croatian records. They are very detailed, listing the names of most Croatian soldiers who received a medal (they were listed in an official publication called "Vjestnici MINORS-a" which gazetted promotions and awards given to personnel of the Croatian Armed Forces). The lists have occasional omissions but all in all most names are there. What isn't listed are the names of Germans who received Croatian medals. I had several names of Germans who definitely received a Croatian decoration and none of them are listed.

                          For the record, of the 577 Iron Trefoil IV Class awarded, 50 of those went to Inf.Rgt.369 which met its end at Stalingrad. None at all were awarded to enlisted men, a few to NCOs and the vast bulk to officers. As your Oblt. belonged to a Croatian-German division, it is no surprise that he was awarded this medal.
