    Okay, a relatively quick check of Lexikon der Wehrmacht showed the 236 Grenadier Rgt attached to the 69th Inf Div in late '44, in the area of East Prussia. ADDITIONALLY, the 56th Inf Div was ALSO in East Prussia about the same time.

    So - it's highly possible the 236th was working with/near/under the 56th ID, and therefore the award would be theoretically possible.

    PLEASE buy the book - it's a nice one, and a good amount of the research is already done on it.

        I did buy the book. I have been looking for a combat soldbuch and now I have one.

          I did some research myself on lexikon der wehrmacht.

          Both the 56th Infantry Division and the 69th (one he was supposed to be in) were both under the 3rd Panzer Army. And they were in the same area at the same time.

          I have circled a few things in the following pictures. What does Kdr. stand for? Commander? (presented the EKI by the commander of the 56th Infantry Division for example?)

              So if it is commander, then it would mean that the award was presented by that commander.

              Example: the EKI was giver to Josef by the Commander of the 56th Infantry Division. Correct?

                You are right, but in his Soldbuch the entry was verified by his Kompanieführer, as you can see.

                  Quite simple, it is the principle of signature of signature and counter-signature.

                  If an award was awarded by one authority, the entry in the Soldbuch/Wehrpass was counter-signed by the directly superior authority in order to make it valid.

                  In the award document, the entry is directly signed by the awarding authority. In the Soldbuch that is the case here, the entry was validated by the company commander.

                  Hope I made myself clear... unfortunately English is not my native language.

                      It was good to read all the remarks; I think that many collectors have learned a lot from this thread.

                      Yes, it is a beautiful Soldbuch to a true combat soldier, or as the germans call it a "Kampfschwein".

                          One thing that I have been interested in doing is collecting all of the medals this man received. And eventually get a uniform that would match the kind he had. I think it would be very interesting to have all of the medala he had.

                          Have any of you ever done this before?

                            Do not go there, get some knowledge before you start to expand into other fields!!!
                            Buy reference books-you need them more than you need medals or uniforms.
                            You will never get the ORIGINAL medals belonging to the Soldbuch unless you get them from the family ditto the tunic.
                            Dont try to walk before you can run, im in my 50's and still learning. I started collecting before there were so many good replicas and the prices were mad, take some advice or the hobby will sicken you.

                                Hi Swayne,

                                I collect soldbuchs and buy medals that would go with it, and I know some other collectors do as well. While the medals are not original to the soldier they are the medals in his book, and should you ever decide to sell a soldbuch..you should sell the items separately for that very reason I gave in my last sentence (unless of course the medals originally came with the soldbuch).

                                How you collect is your choice.. but choose wisely . As you have the ambition to collect the medals that go with the soldbuch, be aware that the medals themselves are expensive. It has hindered my collecting a bit.. and can be hard to track down a hard to find medal. In one of my cases I have a Rumanian medal with kaukasus bar.. and that was hard as heck to find. Anyhow, here is a quick look at how I do mine.

                                They are not complete though. I need 1 medal for the 1st case and tabs/boards, a TDB, tabs/boards for the second case.. and the 3rd one is done except some shoulder boards. I have more that I have to get in cases and the medals for.. but this was just to show you an idea.
