Do you think that his name is Josef Zehnpfennig. That is what the seller said it was, I cant tell.

Do any of you know if that might be it?

                Swayne -
It's in 3 different pictures you've posted - and it's not particularly hard to decipher, as it's not in Sutterlin, not poorly written, and not particularly smudged or erased.

While we're glad to help you out here, you've GOT to start learning German. We won't always be able to help you, if you can't help yourself.

Thanks for the advice Hank. I have been trying hard to be able to read German.

Names are always difficult for me though. I apologize for asking too much of you guys.

                  Sincerely,
                  Swayne Martin

The book looks very good to me too, no red flags at all.

If you intend to buy, go get it, you will not regret it at all. A true combat soldier you got there.

Just my 02 cents on the matter.

                      Thanks for the comments guys.

                      I have a quick question:

Why for the EKI is there written I.R. 56? He was never a part of Inf. Rgt. 56.
It is hard to read the stamp, I would assume that he earned it with Inf. Rgt. 236, like every other award.

                      Any ideas?

It is 56 JD, meaning 56 Infantry Division. A couple of helpers', use lexikon der wehrmacht and axis history factbook for quick reference, also read every thread on soldbuchs. Looking at others over time will help in learning to read the handwritting.

Sometimes a company or regiment was under another units' control.

Thanks for the help and advice Lee.

One thing that I am now confused about is that Josef was never part of any units attached to the 56th Infantry Division. Why would it be from the 56th Division if he was never part of it?

                          Thanks,
                          Swayne

PS. I use lexikon der wehrmacht every day, it is very helpful.

                            Swayne,

Look at page 4, 236 is crossed out.

So it seems that he was transferred to another unit.

Page 17 isn't shown, but 17 says : Fortsetzung zu Seite 4, so I think that - that page will give you more information about what unit he served with after 236.

                            yours friendly

There is nothing written on page 17. His last Erstaz Btl. is not crossed out. (Inf. Ers. Btl. 236)
I jnow that this means that (usually) he would have ended the war with that unit.

What do you think now? I think that the authorizing stamp for the EKI mioght be Inf. Regt. 236, or Gren. Rgt. 236.

                              Thanks,
                              Swayne

Any ideas as to why the 56th Infantry Division was entered?

                                Thanks,
