    LW Soldbuch Lt Vogel

    Dear All,
    I have started work on this one, but any help on Lt Vogel or translation of any of the attached pages will be greatfully accepted. This is probably one of the best LW ones I have left after getting rid of a honour goblet winner last year, more fool me I should have kept it but need the cash

          The lower left hand entry on the right hand page, do you think this is a fake entry? The way it is written is similar to another single entry on another page. Its the style that worries me {1980's female }

                To highlight my total ignorance of LW and the amount of time I have not manage to study this item.

                What are the units in scan 2?

                I know the scan is not great but can you make out any of scan 3?

                Can you make out what the flight hours are allocated to scan 4?

                Scan 5 awards bronze, silver and gold spange
                IC II & I
                Italian radio operators badge?

                    Perhaps not the type of writing we are used to in the Soldbuch and I would be concerned if it was his last unit and/or the awards were in this hand...however there are entries after this date...the Kr.St.R.Nr. matches that of his unit....the stamps also matches his unit on the leave and security check "Schleppgruppe 3"...so I would not worry about these entries!

                      Lt. Vogel Soldbuch

                      Hello,

                      I like this one very much and i also see no problem with the stamping, etc ...

                      IMHO it is some kind of replacement issue but still a nice one due to the units and awards entered !!!

                      As we also can see he was first part of the Erg.Gr.(S) 1 , as posetd before this was one of the 2 official Glider pilot schools and we can fairly safe say that he was attached towards this school for receiving training etc ... in Glider towing.

                      The following units (I./L.L.G. 1, etc ... ) are quite normal as following units for the above named training unit.

                      Nice one + cordial greetings,

                        Soldbuch

                        Hello,

                        I like this book very much but it is a pitty we can't trace all the units as we can see that he received awards prior the institution of the Soldbuch, etc ...

                        * Fliegerschutzenabz. (1941)
                        * Frontflugspange Transporter in bronze (1941)
                        * Eisernes Kreuz 2 e Klasse (1941)

                        Anyway, here is a little more background on the (non training) units in wich your person was active from end 1942.

                        Your person did become a member of I./L.LG. 1 from 01.10.1942 ( iff he was earlyer with this unit then he would have seen action in the ressupply of the Afrikakorps) .

                        In the time between September and October 1942 the unit did receive new towing planes => namely the Do 17 and the trainings took place with the combo : Do 17/ DFS 230

                        The unit was sent towards Russia in late 1942 and did actually take part in teh Kubanbridgehead operation.

                        I have the following numbers on this unit before the Kubanbridgehead operation:

                        I./LLG 1 : 32 Do 17 (total) planes from wich 23 where fully operational.

                        The actual airbase at the Krim was : Kertsch IV

                        During the total mission at the Kuban there where 5 Do 17 planes destroyed by crashlandings !!!!!!!!!

                        In April 1943 the unit returned home towards Hildesheim.

                        More to follow ......

                          the following months

                          Hello,

                          Well, the unit (I./LLG 1) had returned since at its German homebase but did not stay very long, during May 1943 they did move on towards France and where first stationed at Gael (Bretagne) .

                          At the end of May 1943 there was a order from the XI Fliegerkorps that had the result that the unit did move on towards the South of France and became stationed at Lezignan.

                          The commander in France at this time (June 1943) was Hptm. Krug and the strenght of the unit did consist out of :

                          52 Do 17 + 136 DFS 230 planes

                          The main task was training ..........untill the disaster came over in the form of the allied bombing at Istres ( date: 17.08.1943) . It is known that during this attack no less then 11 pilots and personel where killed from the I./LLG 1.

                          The wounde dpersons where probably much higher and there are no exact numbers known anymore and the materialloss was also quite excessive !!!!!!

                          for the I./LLG 1 this was :

                          * 2 Do 17 : destroyed + 9 Do 17 heavely damaged
                          * 39 DFS 230 gliders destroyed + 15 DFS 230 heavely damaged

                          The unit did stay at France untill early 1944 but did move once again towards : Strassburg-Polygon.

                          Your fellow was transferred during 05.1944 towards the so called "Schleppgruppe 3" and was ent towards Russia once again .........

                          more to follow .........

                            The Schleppgruppe 3 time

                            Hello,

                            And then he was a member of the above named unit, he was however to late to see action in the supplying missions towards Kowel.

                            Anyway it is once again known that at the time of June 1944 the Schleppgruppe 3 had the following planes :

                            18 towing machines + 50 Glide rplanes (type: Go 242)

                            There was not much time however to be inactive as the unit was used as a local alert unit and put into actionw herever they did feel the need to !!!!!!!!

                            They did help in ressupply of the 12. Pz. Division during July 1944 and where forced to retreat under Russian pressure towards Warschau and later on towards Posen.

                            On Oktober 1944 the sudden end was near for the unit as it was disbanded and the personel was scattered over different units ...........

                            And thats as far as i can help
