    Soldbuch Entries and Divisional Documentation

I am a collector of items, mostly photographs but also other things (Soldbücher, award docs, etc.), relating to the Luftwaffen-Felddivisionen. For my own research purposes, I work with a lot of documentation from the US National Archives regarding these divisions. Most of the documents I deal with relate to organizational and operational history only, but every once and awhile I run into something like this. I happened to stumble into the following while looking through the divisional records of the 21. Luftwaffen-Felddivision:

The above was a copy taken directly from the microfilm. Through extreme coincidence and good fortune, I happen to also own a Soldbuch from a Lw. Stabsgefreiter who was serving in Lw.Feld-Bataillon z.b.V. 3 at the time that the above order was issued. Lw.Feld-Bataillon z.b.V. 3 was a Lw. penal unit that was formed from elements of the 21. Lw.Felddivision before that division was transferred to the Heer in October 1943. Even when the division was transferred to the Heer, the three Lw. penal battalions (z.b.V. 1, 2 and 3) that were previously subordinate to the 21. Lw.Feldddivision remained attached to it, although they were not "permanent" elements of the division and were later detached in 1944. Page 15 of this soldier's Soldbuch:

Since Lw. Feld-Bataillon z.b.V. 3 was not actually a sub-unit of the division, the wording of entry is slightly diffferent then ordered, and the course was taken about ten days later, through the penal battalion itself. However, I believe this still presents an excellent example to all those interested of how Soldbuch entries can appear in actual divisional orders. Personally, I also like the fact that his relates to a close combat tank destruction course.

    Thats very interesting Jason,

I do have a few Luftwaffen Feld Division Soldbücher myself, and I am sure I have at least one that has mention of a Lw.Feld-Bataillon z.b.V.

Will try and find out which one now......could be a while!?!?!

Jason, thank you for sharing, I really like the order being detailed like "on page 15".

And your soldier took the sniper's course too!

Research means verifying multiple original documents against each other, it always pleases us when two documents match (or when they do not match! just more research is necessary )

Thank you both for your comments.

        Ian:
I would be curious to see which of the LW penal battalions is noted in the Soldbuch you mentioned. It is very hard to find information on the Lw.Feld-Bataillone z.b.V., although I have managed to find archive material on 1,2, 3 (all with the 21. Lw.F.D.) and 5 (with the 6.Lw.F.D.). I understand it might take awhile, but please keep me informed if you can. Unfortunately, this was the only order I found relating to Soldbuch entries, but I have other information on the four above-mentioned battalions if you are interested.

        Akira:
You know I missed that part about the sniper course the first couple of times over because I have a terrible time reading script (in English, German or otherwise - I am terrible). I have really been able to find some great information while researching in the National Archives, and I recommend it to anyone who can get there. For me, it is definitely worth the 700+ mile round trip! I have been able to match a lot of information from the Archives either with photographs or documents like this one. If I get time later tonight or tomorrow I will post in the forum you moderate an order issued by the Divisionsarzt of the 6.Lw.F.D. relating to the awarding of decorations to medical personnel.

The Soldbuch from this Stabsgefreiter has some other interesting details which I will try to post tomorrow when I get some more time to make scans.

Two more interesting parts of this Soldbuch...

I am sorry this took me a few extra days to post, but I have been quite busy recently. There are a number of other interesting aspects to the Soldbuch of Stabsgefreiter Linke, two more of which I have now scanned. First, is his photograph, which was clearly taken when he was an Unteroffizieranwärter:

After serving for about a year in Luftwaffen-Feld-Bataillon z.b.V. 3, Linke went on to 8. Batterie, II./Flak-Regiment 36 (mot.) in April 1944, where he served until March 10th, 1945. Enclosed with his Soldbuch were two certifications of ground combat action, one of which I have scanned here. I assume certifications like this were compiled towards meeting the criteria for the Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe. It should be noted that these two certifications were for combat actions that took place only a few days before his final promotion to Stabsgefreiter - which was perhaps in someway related to his performance during the fighting.
