The B in this case would designate one of the lesser elements under "Einheit".

Dear Ian,
Thank you for such a fast reply. That is what I thought. The number comes from a Krankensammelstelle card from a field hospital in Italy. The card came with a grouping of photographs as well as a Sonderausweis (Marschbefehl) which lists the unit as 1./Lw.Nachrichten-Abteilung 20 - I just wanted to make sure the listed unit and FPN matched up correctly. It is an interesting little group which includes a few rare photographs of this signals company from 20. Lw.Felddivision in Italy. Thanks again.

Thats the correct unit....an abteilung could be made up of 3-4 Kompanies....Einheit just means unit.
The normal breakdown would be as follows:

A - Stab
B - 1 Kp.
C - 2 Kp.
D - 3 Kp.
E - 4 Kp.....and so on

A little info re: this unit:

Divisions Nachrichten Abteilung 20 (L)

Formed 1.11.1943 in Denmark as a Kompanie on transfer to the Army (Heer) from the Nachrichten Kompanie 20, 20 Luftwaffen Feld Division.
August 1944 reinforced to Abteilung strength in Italy through parts of Divisions Nachrichten Abteilung 19 (L).
February 1945 renamed Nachrichten Abteilung 630.

Dear Ian,
Thanks for the extra unit info - actually I do have a couple of volumes of Tessin so I have that already, but I appreciate the post. I do a lot of research on the Luftwaffen-Feld-Divisionen, including working with a lot of archive material, so I am fairly familiar with all 21 of the field divisions and their sub-units. Speaking of, I am about to post some original documentation relating to a Soldbuch entry that I think you might find interesting. Thanks again for the assistance and taking the time to post the extra info.
