If you notice, at the bottom of page 27 there is an entry confirming that Gayda received special pay for engagements in and around Calais, dated 30.September 1944.Attached FilesLast edited by Rob Johnson; 06-09-2010, 11:45 PM.

There is a POW stamp on page 01 stating that Gayda was held at POW camp 2225 (in Zedelghem, Belgium) and was assigned Prisoner of War number 582,455. He was one of the 7500 prisoners taken in Calais by the Canadians (mentioned above in post #3).Attached FilesLast edited by Rob Johnson; 06-09-2010, 11:47 PM.

Seeing the work you do with your books Rob, puts me to shame! What a story they are able to tell us when you put some effort into deciphering them

Thanks, guys! Glad you enjoyed it
It's the research that I enjoy most. Being able to find such detailed information about the units like this - especially when you can pinpoint a specific action/battle in which the soldier was wounded/won an award - is extremely rewarding. It's amazing to hold a SB in your hands and be able to read about where it has been and what its original owner witnessed.... It's quite a rush!

i particularly like it as you have the history of the batterie etc.
I've been to a couple of coastal defences in France and find them fascinating, especially with all the original writings and paintings on the walls.
Great stuff.

Thanks, Lewis! I have a few more Soldbücher to coastal arty units between Normandy and Calais I've yet to research, and if I'm able to find even half of what I was able to find on Roman Gayda's unit I'll still be extatic - especially if I can find photos, either wartime or post-war, of their batteries.
Glad you enjoyed the thread.
