Hi Simon...It 'also important to put Italy under the code 81), a friend who collects Wehrpass for 20 years has found many times the number 81, in the documents of German prisoners in Italy.

Thanks for the link is really interesting ... .. I had not seen American dog tags made for German prisoners ...

Imo it could also be a german pow, taken in Italy and than transferred to a pow camp in africa, or taken in africa and transferred to italy.

The WP I posted is of 114 Jager Division, which was virtually only in Italy and never in Africa...the soldier was Captured in Italy and was interned in Rimini (Italy).

I would say that we can consider it as the southern front 81 (North Africa - Italy)...

- Regarding the request of David Lank ... I suppose that his grandfather was German and not Japanese ... but it was not listed G,but as J.

If is a WP of a soldier of 114 JD may have been captured only in Italy... the Pow Camp 11 in Rimini Enklave was exactly a Villa Marina (4 km south of Cesenatico).....

You can find much information (some very interesting taken from newspapers printed in the Lager) in Rimini Enklave 1945-1947 Patrizia Dogliani Ed. Clueb 2005

for example the blocks was divided by nationality or specialty .. in the 11 and 11a were normal German soldiers...

any idea what can SP go for. C'mon it can't be Spanish....

Thank you for the clarification on the 81 code.

Yes, my grandfather was German (part of 4th Fallschirmdivision) on the Nettuno front. He surrendered soon after the breakout at Nettuno.

According to the WAST records on my Grandfather he was transported from Rom direct to the US Camp Pickett (VA) via New York. WAST states that the journey from Rom to Camp Pickett was completed within 4 days. That seems a little quick to me but that's for another discussion.

Humm. Interesting to see another example. Where was the one on MFF found, do you know? Were these men German nationals who had worked/lived in Spain before the war?

Obvious German names, assume German nationality, but for whatever reason the Americans listed them as originating from Spain?

More questions than answers at the moment.

I thought you would appreciate that Fronti!

Auflauf was discharged from the Army, so nothing special with the SP number, but he's definately NOT Spanish. So perhaps this is just some sort of reference for prisoners held in Dachau after the war? A riddle indeed.

Still trawling for evidence Joe. The Dachau link might imply that the wearers of such Ekm were perhaps SS prisoners under trial - this might earn them the nomenclature of "special" but all the Ekm I've seen imply nothing more than standard Heer ranks rather than SS.

If anyone else has, or comes across further examples of these Ekm then please let me know.
