What do you think is rare to have .....

    Hello Gents

I was wondering what is rare to have?

Is it the unit, or the battles etc. I was wondering what you think is rare?

For instanstace i have two have two 2 soldbucher from two soldiers who fouht in the same unit on the western front (holland on 17 september 1944). Both in the stab. The day that Market Garden started. Is this rare??

An extra is that one signed the other ones soldbuch as a weapon specialist

Just out of curiousity, i was wondering

    Erwin,

People have different opinions on what is rare but yes, desirable battles such as El-Alamain, Dieppe, Kursk, Stalingrad, Normandy, Arnham, Ardennes etc..those are the big names but there are smaller battles also depending on which front you are interested in.

Desirable signatures in the document can add to the price...equipment issued such camo clothing, weapons etc.

What awards he had......what he wears in the photo....

The list goes on but each has to be taken on their individual merit....when you look into each item, just because he "was there" it does not necessarily mean it is worth a **** load of money!!! Yes, he might have been there but he had no awards, was perhaps on the Staff and miles away from the action but still nice to have as an example!

Just to mention one case.....I have a Soldbuch to a Landesschützen guy, looked pretty boring when I picked it up, he was young but served in a unit of people with stomach ailments and he was issued camo uniform and a K98 with scope. When I got it home and checked his other units he was in Festung Lorient and died there....not bad for DM 35.- I thought! Now I might think that this is worth £200, someone who collects sniper related or Lorient might think that is cheap, however someone who does not know much might think it is worth €40.

            Rare

I would agree with Ian that while certain battles typically stand out as being quite desireable or "rare" the old saying really applies "...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...." and rareity therein.

Case in point I know there are individuals who for instance enjoy Channel Islands, or service in Norway etc.. Ultimately one persons rare does not equal anothers.

That said the well know battles, Normandy, Kursk, Stalingrad etc. appeal to a wide audience and if someone is looking for items which are likely to sell based on mass appeal these would be the ones that will move.

btw I'm not implying you are interested in the latter just makng a point.

OK now start sending me your Battle of Britain flyer Soldbuch and Wehrpas, they are not rare at all.

                    Erwin,

I bet you can't guess what I am going to say. As a lot of you know I collect documents etc from Germans who fought in the Battle of Arnhem. Some of mine include:

                    1. Grouping of a soldier - Stug Bde 280 - EK1 and Wound Badge document awarded form the battle (signed by Bittrich)
                    2. Luftwaffe Soldbuch & Wehrpass of a Airfield Support unit in Holland that fought as infantry - mention his combat days in Arnhem.
                    3. EKII award document for a soldier in a Heer unit that fought in Arnhem
                    4. A wehrpass for Fliegerhorst Kompanie soldier who fought in Arnhem - states the places he fought in Holland including combat against 'Terrorists'.

All can be seen here: http://www.defendingarnhem.com/perioditems.htm

I like my documents to mention 'Arnhem or Arnheim' in the document as proof that the person was there.

Several dog tags that I call rare:

                      - Freiwilligen Legion Norwegen
                      - SS-Freiwilligen Legion Flandern
                      - Estnische SS-Legion
                      - SS-Freiwilligen-Legion Niederlande

It`s quite impossible to find dog tags of Indische Freiwilligen Legion d. W-SS and Italienische-Freiwilligen-Legion, so now I look for the dog tag of Lettische SS-Freiwilligen Legion to close my SS legionary field.

You guys are (IMHO) confusing "rare" with "desirable".

Each and every book is rare, because there isn't a single other one like it.

However, only some are desirable, because they are what people want/look for/find interesting.
