      Interesting Soldbuch Lee,

Although he received the Minesweepers Badge which to be honest is quite common, he received it in the U-Boat hunting role, of course as a member of a U-Jagd Flottille.

Page 3 and 20 bear the signature of Flottillenchef Korvettenkapitän Dr. Ing. Wachhausen.
Page 20 also bears the facsimile signature of Flottillenchef Korvettenkapitän Friedrich Wunderlich.

Leave 3 states ground for leave z.W.d.G. - zur Wiederherstellung der Gesundheit - for the restoration of health.

He started off with Marine Flak Abteilung 216 in and around Gotenhafen. Obviously as a gunner on U-Jagd as well.

As Christof mentioned above UJ 2228 was the Italian corvette "Euterpe". It was sunk by the crew 24.4.1945 off the coast of Genoa.

Also UJ 2221 was the Italian corvette "Vespa" which was also sunk on the same day by the crew.

      FP Nr. 51761 (Page 3)
      (2.1.1940-11.3.1943) 22. U-Jagd-Flottille U.J. 2211
      (8.9.1943-22.4.1944) 10.11.1943 6. Sicherungs-Flottille U.J. 6074
      (23.4.1944-24.11.1944) 19.6.1944 cancelled

UJ 6074 was the French ship "Hardi" (SM 322). It was sunk 21.7.1944 off the Gulf of Genoa. Most probably he was abourd this ship at the time and explains his wound badge and the loss of his clothing!

      FP Nr. 60155

      7.7.1944 22. U-Jagd-Flottille U.J. 2228
      14.9.1944 13. Sicherungs-Flottille SG 24

22 U-Jagd Flottille operatored as coastal and escort protection the west Mediterranean. 6 Sicherungs Flottille operated on the French south coast.

If you understand french, I wrote an article about the Soldbuch of a Matr. gefreiter fighting in the Mediterranean sea with 22. U-Bootsjagdflottille and latter with 6. Sicherungsflottille. You will find it on Militaria-mag n° 284 (mars 2009). I present a Soldbuch like yours with great photos and documents.

                Uj2228

                Hi Folks:

I was researching the above ship and came across this posting. WOW...I own a Minesweeper/U-boat Hunter Badge certificate and "Kriegsmarine Arsenal "La Spezia" Passierschein" for Matrosehauptgefreiter Albert Spindler who was on the same ship. the award document is dated 20 Dec 1944 and the pass is dated 28 Mar 1945.

What is really strange is that my Grandmother's Maiden Name was "Spindler" and my Great Grandfather came from Germany in 1880-90s...so I was wondering if he was related.

Back to point....it was great to see the info>>>Thanks to everyone.
