    Wehrstammbuch

I would like to start a topic about the 'Wehrstammbuch', you rarely see them on WAF and IMHO it is a very interesting book, because it has the same and even more information compared to the Wehrpass.
Probably also a topic so people can show there Wehrstammbücher??

    So the question:
What is your opinion about the Wehrstammbuch?

    Dennis,

I would certainly be interested in posting the few Wehrstammbuch that I have.

For myself I do find the WSB interesting since, as you noted they contain pretty much the same information as in the Wehrpas, although where I have had the opportunity to see both side by side some information is abbreviated in the WSB, battle notations in particular.

The WSB is nice in that it lists information on earlier affliations i.e. SA, NFSK etc. which is not always listed if at all in the Wehrpas.

Certainly if given the choice of the WSB over a Soldbuch or Wehpas I would choose the latter since it was held with the unit vs. the WSB which remained in the relative security of the soldiers orignal recruitment office.

    Will post some examples later.

    Cheers

    Jeremy

I have a few Wehrstammbücher and I do like them, however personally I prefer the Soldbuch.
With that said, I have 4 or 5 examples where I have the Soldbuch, Wehrpaß and Wehrstammbuch...even Gesundheitsbuch and other documents in some instance!
The down side for a lot of collectors is the fact it has no photo and of course it was kept by the Wehrbezirks/Wehrmeldamt, not a personal item!
As Jeremy pointed out it can have additional entries that are not found elsewhere.

As he, I will try and post some examples at the weekend.

I have a large lot of document groupings which include a.o. the Wehrstammbuecher.

There are good examples of entries in the WSB which are not entered in the Wehrpass! I have a couple of SS groupings containing both the WSB + WP and in the WSB it lists fightings at the "Invasionsfront" (meaning in Normandy 1944) which are not entered in the WP, but which is exiting information! When you read the WP you think that he was not in the sought after actions, but the WSB makes it a lot better!

This shows that the WSB contains the most thorough information about the soldier's career.

          Mel,

What you are stating is clearly a mistake as the battle actions in the Wehrpass should mirror that of the Wehrstammbuch as they are both updated according to the Kriegststammrollenblatt! Which also included training, promotions, awards etc.

I do have an example where there are awards that are mentioned in the Soldbuch but not in Wehrpass, likewise awards in Wstb that are not in Soldbuch so to get the true pictured all 3 books are needed!

Of course this can not be said of all documents you see and the price can not be based on he could have had the award or he must have been entitled to awards etc. which some dealers do.

However there are entries that do not mirror both documents.....criminal record entries for example are not in Wehrpass, pre muster records.....
Can't remember much more at the moment as I am tired and don't have one in front of me......

          /Ian

I'll get the ball rolling on this thread.

The following images are from the Wehrstammbuch of Oberleutnant Heinz Schmidt. Schmidt served with Jagdgeschwader 52 finally as 6th staffel, staffelkapitan and ended up going missing in action on 9 Sept. 43, possibly shot down accidentally by Hungarian fighters. At the time of Schmidts death he had 173 victories, 712 Feindfluge and wore the Oak Leaves to the Knights cross.

Unlike the Wehrstammbuch included on the front cover the solders full name, rank, birth year and Wehrnummer.

            Enjoy
