That is a nice against regulations photo of Oblt. Kühlmann wearing his dienstmütze. One of the nicest officer Soldbuch photos I have seen on the forum.

From the April, 1945 dates it appears he probably ended the war while recuperating from a gun shot wound in a Lazerette. Could not find anything from the scans that would place him in Silesia with his unit and surrender tot he Russians at a later date.

Agree. The majority of his combat time came later in the war, no doubt after receiving his commission and being transferred from Artillery to Infantry. He suffered a minor shrapnel wound on/about 01.August 1944 and then shortly afterwords - in October - a gunshot wound, and spent the next few months recuperating. Without seeing the last page of leave entries it's hard to tell when he went back to the front lines, but it wasn't for very long as he was wounded in late Feb./early March 1945 by shrapnel and - again from the entries shown - it would appear he was in lazarett until early April. It Are there any entries after 05.April 1945? It seems as though he was sent back to his field unit - are there any entries confirming this? Any gear or weapons entries?


Too bad there's no award date listed on the CCC entry.

Any chance the Nahkampftage sheet is entered in there somewhere? Those are always nice to have.

This soldier fought in really a lot of the lasts battles of the Reich:

- To rescue the 1 Panzer-Armee encirled between the Bug and the Dnestr
- In the battles of Ternopol, Berezhany, Stanislav
- In the battle of Brody
- at Uzhgorod and Breslau (Wroclaw)

until surrending to the Red Army in Silesia.

I did not know the 227 Jäger Regiment was at Breslau? Was 227 Jäger detached from Jäger Division 100?

From Jan-May, 1945 Jäger Division 100 served with HGr Mitte, 17th Army, VIII Army Corps which was in Czechoslovokia (Silesia) well outside of the seige going on inside Breslau.

Two other possibilities.

First, and most likely if Jäger Regiment 227 was with the 100th Jäger division in April, 1945 then Oblt. Kühlmann was in the Trautenau area of Southern Silesia. If this is the case, depending on the severity of his wound Oblt. Kühlmann would have been evacuated to a hospital in Germany, or Austria and that would have likely ended his military service at the front. Thus avoiding the May collapse and Soviet capture.

The other possibility. During May, 1945 elements of the 17th Army were able to make there way West. Small elements of the 100 Jäger Division may have done the same going West through the Sudeten Mountains. Elements of the 17th Army were in a position to do so unlike the bulk of Heinrici's First Panzer Army further South-East.

In January the 100 Jäger Division was under the Heeresgruppe A (south) and in february was transferred to Heeresgruppe Mitte under VIII AK.

For sure the division fought the Red Army in Silesia (where it surrended in may 1945 to the soviets) and the Silesia is close to Breslau area where the 100 JD were on march.

That is correct. The 100th Jäger Division did indeed fight in Silesia until it surrendered in May, 1945. It is erroneuos though to infer that although the 100th Jäger was fighting in Silesia it was somehow connected to the defense of Breslau which it was not. If you are using Lexicon der Wehrmacht for the 100th Jäger Division it is only good up until Feb, 1945.

More detailed sources place the 100th Jäger Division from Jan-May, 1945 remaining with the 17th Army, VIII Army Corps. The 100th Jäger Division largely surrendered around the town of Trautenau (modern spelling Trutnov) which can be clearly seen on the Kampf Lage Ost some distance outside of the beseiged city of Breslau.

Imo, Oblt. Kühlmann was likely not made a prisoner of the Soviets with his Division during the May collapse, and was lucky enough to find himself at another location during that time for any number of possible reasons.

Also this time i didn't look at Lexikon...
I have hundred and hundred of Lage Ost map but no one after april 25 1945.
Where you see that the 100 surrended around the town of Trautenau?!?
(i wrote Breslau to indicate the area where it surrended because i found the name indicated in the lists i have token from the NARA archives).
