Nice Dienstausweis... and as you pointed out, very strange that he is not wearing any shoulder straps! I've seen some (most are late-war) photos in books, on line, etc. where soldiers are not wearing shoulder straps, but this is the first time I have seen this in a photo used in/on a ID.

Perhaps a new issue M43 feldbluse? Looks like the ID was issued August 1943, which is close to the new issue and perhaps they were not supplied with button down rank straps at the time vs. sewn in type previously used. Very nice document group!
