The tag was worn most probably by a worker or Werkschutze from this factory.

(Military) Guards should have been under the command of a military unit and the name of this unit should be nominated on the dogtag.

You are probably right, but the strange thing obout this dogtag is the fact that it was found in a German M42 helmet, near the factory !

The colored chips could be from other VDM workers or from tools.
Not all of the workmen could have had dog tags.
Near the VDM factory Sackisch there was also a KZ Aussenlager from Gross-Rosen. So there could have also been slave labour.

The Werkschutz isn`t under military control !

With their main job, they are workers, in case of an air raid they are trained to handle the factorys own Flak, do air-raid protection, etc.

They wore those civil dogtags like above.
