    Interesting Normandie Major's Soldbuch

I was looking through my IDs today and discovered that I had a rather significant Soldbuch for a Major on the Stab of the LXXXIV. Armeekorps, which was the primary Armeekorps at Normandie on D-Day. I never thoroughly researched this Soldbuch and only kept it because the Major, Leopold Kaufmann, was a recipient of the German Cross in Silver.

On D-Day, the LXXXIV. Armeekorps was commanded by General der Artillerie Erich Marcks, who was depicted in the movie The Longest Day. Marcks' headquarters was at Château De Chiffrevast. Major Leopold Kaufmann was the Quartiermeister of the Corps, serving as the supply officer, a very important role. One can just imagine what Kaufmann experienced on 6 June 1944. Like General Marcks, Major Kaufmann did not survive the fighting at Normandie. On 19 August 1944, Kaufmann was killed in action and is now buried in Champigny-St. Andre, France.

                    Very intereting Barry,

His DKiS would appear to be from 6 Inf.Div.

                            Curtiss,

No, unfortunately I don't know how Kaufmann was killed. He was probably killed near St. Lo since the Headquarters of the LXXXIV. Armeekorps was based there. During my next visit to the National Archives, I plan to review the records for this Armeekorps - perhaps they contain something about Kaufmann's death.

                              Barry,

on the 19 august St.Lo was liberated long ago and the falaise pocket had been closed or was closing definately so it could be that he was killed there trying to escape IMO
