Very nice document, as always, Rob !
Here is one of the few I have about this typ of unit. It's a Sb related to StuG. Abt. 902, one of the few army independant unit of Sturmartillerie who fought in Normandy.
Unfortunatly, it's a "Zweitschrift", so the informations about the first part of his career fell. According to the awards page, this man began the service before the war : he got the Schuss Auszeichnung 2. Kl. in 1936.
The first page of his paybook shows the reference of his Erk. Marke, related to the IV./AR 253. It shows that he was first an artillery man before to join the Sturmartillerie.
Hard to say what he did exactly during the first part of war (western invasion with IV./Art. Regt. 253 ? Later in eastern front with s. Art. Abt. 842 who was formed with IV./253 ?). But he got the Ostmedaille and the EK 2 in july 41.
He joined the SturmGesch. Ers. u. Ausb. 300 at least in march 43 and the StuG. Abt. 902 at the beginning of 1944 when that one was formed in France (Tours area). The 1st of june 44, the 902. Brigage had 31 StuG. 40 (and no StuH 42). The unit is sent to Cotentin during june (around the 3rd week) and attached to 91.ID (and Kpfgr. 243.ID) until end of july, at least. On 1st of july, this man became Wachtmeister. He was probably Panzerführer (?).
The remants of the brigade were pushed by the american offensiv of "Cobra" and the unit seems to be in Mayenne and later in Sarthe during first part of august 44.
He survived but seems to be wounded : indeed, he got VW Abz. in 20 of September. After few time on Westwall, he entered in hospital on 18 october 44, for unknow reason (non medical code). He was still there at the begining of 1945.

GD Panzer Soldbuch

Here's an interesting Soldbuch I recently acquired. His story is a sad one since he was killed at the end of the war when he was just 17. Panzerschütze Gerard Jenisch resembles the kid from "A Christmas Story" as my friend Lee Luke pointed out. His Erkennungsmarke was issued by Panzertruppen Abteilung G.D. - Staatskanzlei, a rather rare unit. It was formed after 20 July 1944 and was a light Panzerzug (Tank Platoon) of Wachbataillon (Guard Battalion) Grossdeutschland that used Panzer IIs. It was an Alarmeinheit (Emergency Response Unit) to be used in the event of something like 20 July 1944 happening again. Jenisch attended the Offizierbewerber-Schule "GD" (Officer's Candidate School "GD"), but never joined Grossdeutschland's Panzer force. He was thrown into combat as an infantryman within western Germany at the end of the war and succumbed to a bullet wound on 8 April 1945.
