I've never seen that kind of a dogtag before, but it's a very nice item !

Would it be not a dog tag but a coffin marker...??

        A coffin marker for detective?
I don't think so this is pre II WW and had 2 cord holes on the upper edge.
At least IIWW German coffin markers look totally different
And finally - I do not buy stuff from people who could deal with coffin markers.

The inscription on the tag reads:
Detektiv = detective or private investigator
Gustav Mieklei = christan and family name
So it probably is of civilian origin, as detective is no military rank.
          Regards
          Matthias
