    soldbuch U-boat

    HI
    I have it.
    MtrHGfr Willy Schmidtke, U-278 (Feldpostnummer: M 49691)

What do you think about award EK1 on 4 may 1945? Is it really?
Soldbuchs of team were on the boat always? Who is wrote rewarding in soldbuch? The captain wrote in it during a patrol?

It does not have a photo and the first page. How much it cost?

Sorry, but I may not post attachments

    I can answer one question,

U-boat soldbuchs were left at base when they went on patrol.

Im sure some of the more experienced kriegsmarine soldbuch owners will comment on the entries.

Difficult to say from those pictures......there should be a signature against each entry....i.e. if there were 5 awards but made on 3 occasions, expect 3 stamps and 3 signatures!

From the scan I can not make out how many signatures are actually there........I think I can see 5 signatures but 4 stamps!?!?!?!?

Also, there is a mistake on the Spange...when the Bronze was written it was without reference to grade. When the silver was entered, grade was written against both, however the latter has an incorrect date of 30.3.44!

There does appear to be a signature of Joachim Franze against the EK I, but how does compare to other signatures in the book?

You can see the EK II was awarded 9.10.1944, this was after the boat had returned to port, which was normal. However, the EK I was awarded 5.4.1945 whilst the boat was still at sea! This would made me wonder about the entry! With it being the end of the war, mistakes could be made!

Personally I would need to check the whole book through, which clearer, sharper scans!.....my first impressions are, I do not like it.

U-278 made 7 patrols of which most seemed to be unsuccessful. With that in mind would he we worthy of an EK I....just having the Spange in Silver is not sufficient.

The last patrol was 10.4.1945 - 9.5.1945, departure and arrival was Narvik, so he would have had his Soldbuch on return!

Yes, I know he was on the boat......the signature on the award page looks different to the one underneath, both Franze!

There are four stamps that correspond with 4 awards......the EK I does not appear to have a stamp but does have a signature....also his rank and position is not entered against this award!

Can you post a larger scan of the award page?

          /Ian

Also I think the soldbuch has date of rewarding but not date of delivery of the awards. For example, the sailor has made a feat, the captain recommended to award to him, the radio operator has sent the telegramme on base. In a staff the clerk has written in soldbuch about the award. After patrol the captain has registered it by signature.
Maybe date of EK2 and EK1 coincides with the patrol therefore. And a bage of U-boat and the U-boat frontspanges were given after the patrol, when the days of a patrol are calculated.

              Interesting version, isn`t it.......

In the case of the EKI the 4th May award i believe reflects the last day of the U-boat war, ie. it would have been awarded after the boat's return to Narvik on the 9th
