          Hello,

thanks Erich for the additional info!can one of you give me the english translation for" Kampfhandlg. gegen Russland" I know what gegen Russland is but what about that first word (battle something??) did he see combat while in a RAD unit attached to army group south?

I don't think it means that HE was in "combat operations" (Kampfhandlung)... from the OTHER entries specifying "rear area" (what we would call line-of-communication zone) and "operational area"... I interpret these as indicating that he was in a Reichs Labor Corps capacity BEHIND the specified military commands' combat operations. He was thus in the "war zone" rather than "front line," in other words.

Probably repairing bridges, roads, buildings, etc.

              Hello Rick,

here is something that i failed to mention when i posted this awhile back-in regards to the Kampfhandlung entry, during dates of this last entry he was awarded the wound badge in black, wouldnt the only way you could recieve this is if you were wounded in combat?take into consideration that during this time a number of RAD units that were behind german lines were forced into action during Russian counter attacks, partisan attacks on supply lines etc-

              regards Yancy

He could have been wounded in an air attack on a bridge, or by artillery fire, or indeed by partisan attack...

without The Rest Of The Story impossible to say.

But I don't think at this stage of the war the RAD were being used as infantry.

RAD units were pressed into service as rear eschelon troops as needed. Here's a photo of a young RAD chap who was "made a soldier" on 8/26/29. Originally of the 1/174 RAD he and his unit were attached to the 3.105 as of 8.26.39. I have his photo albumn and he went through the Polish campaign as a classic POW- guarding, marching-to-yet-another-village, bridge-guarding etc.etc. trooper.

                      Hello,

The mans whos dienstausweis and personalakte I have was the commander of 1 of only 13 RAD gruppes in the Ukraine attached to Army group south ,the RAD units of army group south were involved in heavy fighting during the Russian counter attack that was launched after the German 1942 spring offensive -Hoffers wound badge entry is dated august 1941,before this fighting began,I guess Ricks theory is probably correct-his RAD unit had something to do with ammunition, either getting ammo unloaded, manning a ammo depot, etc (Im sure one of the many documents i have on this man will explain what exactly he did)any kind of supply convoy, train, depot, etc seems to me a likely target for air attacks, artillery etc-Jeff I to have many pictures of RAD men involved in the early campaigns,Im manly curious about RAD units that actually were involved in combat as opposed to guarding POWs,bridges,etc-I posted a picture in a early thread from my RAD 1943 calender showing RAD men loading bombs on a stuka and guarding a airfield in Russia-I know they were used as bicycle messengers on the Russian front (I have a few pictures of these as well)I know a bunch of RAD units saw combat in 1942,I have and have seen photos of RAD men being awarded the EK2.
