    Hi,

    A picture of the disc would help some- I don't quite understand the 'lh', however the '39' would be this soldier's Stammrollennummer, the rest stands for:
    2. Ost-Kompanie 7. Infanterie Division (2nd East Company of the 7th Infantry Division). This Kompanie would have been composed of Eastern volunteers (Turkistanis, Ukrainians, etc.), something like those units of the SS, but of course in this case they're in the Heer.

        Hi,

        No, he's wrong- in older German, a capital 'I' is written like a 'J'- most Infanterie discs you're likely to see will be written as Jnfanterie. It's rather uncommon to see a Latin 'I' actually. The first indication that this isn't a Jaeger Division is that they are usually denoted 'Jag.'- presumably so as not to become confused with the 'J' of Infanterie. The second one is that, according to the Wehrmacht Lexikon website, there was no 7. Jaeger Division.

        Looking at the scan you posted, I have no idea what the 'LH' stands for- it's quite specifically placed with the Stammrollennummer so perhaps is something specifically related to the Osteinheiten. I might have thought it was 'Lehr' if it was 'Lh' and not 'LH'- the capitalized 'H' suggests it's a second word.

        It's an interesting piece...

          thanks for the info about the J.

          could LH say something about the country the person came from?

            No problem- I'm happy to help

            Honestly, I really don't know what the 'LH' could be- nothing in my lists of abbreviations makes much sense.

                Hi, this site might be helpful? It is not dog tag related but should prove useful;

                Cheers, Ade.

                  I use Jean Hoeidal's Erkennungsmarken des Zweiten Weltkrieges for ones I'm not familiar with- I'm afraid I don't know of an online list for Erkennungsmarken abbreviations. If you're thinking of beginning a collection of discs, I recommend getting the book. If you just think you'll get one here and there, just go ahead and post them- we'd be happy to help decipher them for you.

                    Greetings to all!
                    "LH", probably, means Luftwaffenhelfern.
                    Since 44 years was is generated much Luftwaffenhelfernen Ost Kompanie from Russians, Ukrainians and Byelorussians.
                    Probably, it is one of them.

                      Yes indeed, that makes sense. I've just recently seen another disc from a Russian unit with this same mark- L. H.
