    SS Dog (Animal) Tag....

    http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...tab%3DWatching

A while back, a grouping of these 'SS Hunde' tags, with names like Bruno, Max, Wolf, etc. began appearing on the market. In fact, this exact "SS Bruno 1" tag was offered to me directly a short while back but without the metal attachment loop or tattered collar remnants (which obviously have been added since this piece was offered to me).

I am of the opinion that these are basically old carnival tokens or industrial ID 'blanks' (the kind found attached with a wire to portable fire extinguishers, etc) that have just been recently stamped 'SS' along with a serial number and a dogs name, and artificially aged.

While an argument can be made that these are 'field made' pieces, I believe such an argument is just wishful thinking.

I have various examples of original SS Metal ID's for dogs and they are 10 times this quality.

    Hi there,

Iam 100% with you and I also think they are fake. The token looks civillian pre war and the lettering looks a bit new to me.

I have collected Hunde material for years, with enough experience (good and bad !!) to make a fairly accurate judgment on the originality and authenticity of material such as this.

I have examples of original and unquestionable SS Hunde identification tags from the foremost specialized SS Dog Training and Handling School, the quality of which (in regards to material, manufacture and finish) puts pieces such as this to shame. As I previously stated, anyone defending such material with the (last resort) 'field made' or 'late war' arguments, is basically fooling themselves. I hesitate (due to the forgers out there) to diverge any factual information in regards to why this tag is so extremely bad, but there were period orders detailing the specifics of these tags, not one of which the tag in question adheres to.

As noted, this 'SS' Hunde tag is nothing more then a old (civilian) carnival token or (more likely) an industrial ID 'blank' that is / are still used today to identify industrial equipment which was 'paired up' with a (cheap) little hook and a tattered old piece of leather.
