    100TH Post ! Kreta Wehrpass.

I just posted this on the FJ forum . I thought I should post it here as well.

Seeing this is my 100th post on the forum, I thought I would post one of my favourite FJ paper items. I bugged a couple of FJ collectors on this forum for a while to help me find a Kreta Wehrpass. Thank you to EQ for making this purchase possible.

It is a Wehrpass to Wolfgang Schulze who volunteered for the paratroopers right after Holland (June 1940). He was assigned to the 9th Company / Fallschirm Jg. Rgt. 3 in July of 1940 ( the month it was formed ) .

He jumped and was killed on the 1st day near Galatas.

Interesting also is that the book shows him making an air landing at Korinth on April 29th.

The Wehrpass has entries for paratrooper training and paratrooper badge.

    Trained in: K98, P08, MG34, etc.

I wrote to the volksbund in Germany asking if they had any information on Wolfgang Schulze. This is what they sent me.

    Information:

    Wolfgang Schulze, + 20.5.1941

    Dear Mr. Winkler,
we refer to your e-mail and can inform you about the following details:
    Name: Wolfgang Schulze
    Dienstgrad: Gefreiter
    geboren: 07.11.1919, Kassel
    Truppenteil: 9./F.J.R.3
    Erkennungsmarke: -201-62772-
    Todestag: 20.05.1941
    Todesort: 4 km südw.Chania
Erstbestattungsort: Agia/Chania, a.d.Str. Canee Alikianos, Efdh. des
    III/F.J.R.3 Gr.114
    Zweitbestattungsort: Galatas, Gfdh., K-Grab
    umgebettet nach: Maleme / Griechenland
    Block: 4
    Kameradengrab

He was buried first in Agia on the cemetery for soldiers of the military unit F.J.R.3. His remains have been transferred to Galatas and his final resting place he has found in Maleme in a grave together with his former fellows.
The German War Cemetery of Maleme is situated 20 km North of Chania, the main town on the island of Crete. Between April and November 1960 the people of the Volksbund have been able to exhume more than 4460 German soldiers from spread small gravesides, from outside cemeteries or from temporary burial places on the island of Crete. Before these remains found their final resting place in Maleme they had to be stored in the monastry of Gonai in sarkophages for several years. The cemetery of Maleme has been opened with a ceremony on Oct. 6, 1974.
We hope that this may help you, send our best wishes for Christmas and wish you a happy New Year.
    Mit freundlichen Grüßen

A brief history about the 9th Company 3rd Battalion FJR 3.I took the following from Klaus Peters book FJR 3.

"On 20th May 1941, at about 07h15 the 3rd Battalion jumped as the spearhead to clear the area around Galatas and to the south . The 9th company, together with the battalion commander, Major Heilmann, landed near the Alikianou-Chania road but amongst heavily defended and fortified positions. In spite of heavy losses the high ground was seized."

There is a photo of a memorial showing all the men killed in the 9th company. I will post a picture of it with this thread. I counted 57 killed in this company alone.

If anyone has more info on this company please let me know. I would really like to find out some more info about it.

I wish I had a picture of his grave to add to this thread, I guess I will get one when I make my way across to the 70th anniversary of the battle in 2011.

    All the best.
    Shaun
