    SS LAH sb on e-stand

    Hello,

this sb is currently for sale on the e-stand:
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=313974

but I find the photo in this sb very strange.
Looks like it is a photo of a reenactor.
Haven't seen this "type" of photo before.

    Some other thoughts?

    best,

    Nico

It does look like a photo from one of those passport photo booths.

I think the key would be if the stamps over the photo are real with period ink. Mike.

Photo aside, I can tell you that the entry on page 03 is 100% legit.

When SS-Art.Rgt.1 was reformed in in the spring of 1944 after being almost completely decimated fighting in the east, the batteries were restructured and and as a result of this reorganization and down time, Soldbücher were re-issued, updated, repaired, replaced, new books issued, etc. I have a Soldbuch from a NCO who served with SS-Art.Rgt.1 that has a similar entry on page 02 (Soldbuch closed out as the result of a new Soldbuch being issued) which is done in the same hand as the entry in the Soldbuch on the estand. I can assure you that my book is from an absolutely unquestionable source.

If you look at page 03 of the book in question, it makes mention of a new Soldbuch being issued - through the 2.(gp)/SS-Art.Rgt.1 - due to fault on page 01 (which is now missing.) Even if the date weren't present (29.Sept.1944) we would be able to determine due to the mention of the 2.kompanie being the 'gepanzert' kompanie that this entry was done 'after' the restructure.

The rest of the entries in this book look good to me as well, and - without having the time right now to dig further - I have a feeling the photo is OK (although it is completely possible it was added post-war)

I'll have a closer look when I get home from work tonight...

        Rob

EDIT: here's a photo of the similar entry in my book, made in April of 1944, just before the restructure of SS-Art.Rgt.1:

            Thanks for the info, Rob.

I myself don't have a problem with the stamps or the writings, but I just have an itchy feeling about the picture.

              Mike-

There are a few books out there I'd recommend, but most of what I posted is a result of lots of research done through hands-on examination and comparison of original Soldbücher and reading up on various unit histories (in this case, SS-Art.Rgt.1).

"Papers, please" by Ray Cowdery is a good reference for general information on all sorts of 3rd Reich ID's, Ausweise, etc.

I'd also recommend "A Collector's Guide to WWII German Wehrpasses & Soldbuchs" as well as "Military Identity Documents of the Third Reich" by Emilie C. Stewart. Unfortunately, both are out of print and as a result a bit difficult to locate.

“Personnel Documents of the SS” by Charles Barger and J.A. Bowman is also worth picking up, as are the Forman Guide's to 3rd Reich Docs vols. 1 and 2

There are more, but this is all I can come up with off the top of my head...

              Hope this helps.

A real shame about page 01/02 missing, though

Thanks Rob for the thought on the photo

When page 1-2 would be present, it would be indeed a killer sb an I'm quite sure it would already be sold.

I think since the latest date is 09-29-44, he would have been had a big chance to be involved in the battle of the bulge, no ?

I received a couple of emails concerning doubts about the photo in that Soldbuch.

As far as I can see the photo is original to the booklet.
Same unitstamps on the photo as the unit he served with in that period.

Note that the photo was only used in that Soldbuch for short period as the booklet was replaced by another new SB.

Nico from this SB you will never know if this man served in the Battle of the Bulge or not, only the WASt or the new SB (or other docs from the man) can tell you that.

                      yours friendly

While not going into details (which will no doubt irritate a few people), let me say that the photo in this LAH Assault Gunner's Soldbuch is an original, period entered photo.

If that photo is not original to the Soldbuch (which it is), then the Soldbuch also has two immediate other "issues" (which it does not), all of which should be immediately apparent to serious Soldbuch enthusiasts.

Everything here is legitimate. A huge shame pages 1-2 are missing......

Well, he may have fought in the battle, but one thing is for sure - this Soldbuch definitely wasn't there
