Hauptmann d.R SB Employment Question (Outstanding Photo as a plus!)

I have just received a new SB to an Oberleutnant der Reserve (promoted to Hauptmann D.R on 1st Feb 1942), and his list of appointments lead me to ask the following..

During the Polish campaign and up to & including the Greek campaign he served with Art.Rgt 116 (5 Pz Div) but after that he was posted to a number of rail units, namely those shown on the scans, before I believe being appointed to a number of Ersatz Btl units. He twice went to a Discharge Commission.
My question being what were these railway commands and would he of served at them as a civilian discharged from the army prior to another call up, or would he of served in them in a military capacity? His profession was a teacher so I am leaning towards a military capacity, especially as he was also sent to the railways in Oslo but if that is the case why the Discharge Commissions?

Home Front - Staff 6th Feb 1942 to 20th Jun 1942

Home Front - Staff 4th Oct 1944 to 1st Nov 1944

Any help, info or educated guesses would be appreciated as I am stuck on this.

The Bahnhofskommandantur, Ausladekommissar and the Entlassungsstellen assignments were all while Aktiv and in uniform. The first two all had small military staffs of 3 - 12 officers and NCOs/men. The commander was usually a Hauptmann. The only civilians would have been indigenous (Norwegians). An Entlassungsstelle also had a small military staff along with a handful of uniformed Beamten (paymasters, administrators, maybe an M.D., etc.). For example, under Oberbefehlshaber Südost (Heeresgruppe F) in August 1944 there were 122 Bahnhofskommandanturen (Klasse I and Klasse II) and 5 or 6 Ausladekommissare. So there were a lot of them.

Many thanks for the information. It seems strange that an artillery officer, i.e. combat officer, would be posted to various rail units in between various artillery/pak assignments, but I suppose people were posted where they were needed most at the time or to gain command experience.

Any chance that he could have been wounded or suffered a breakdown that required an extended convalescence or assignment to rear area positions?

Could also be that he had special knowledge by his civilian profession in transportation things. May be he was with the German Railway before the war ?

Could simply be his age and/or fitness state at that time.

Pages 12-13 would help if there are any entries, and possibly 14-15!

Looking at the Lazarett pages it would appear that the rail assignments may of been a posting for convalescence as he has a total of 9 entries, with most being for Code 19 (Breathing organ problems excluding TB) and one for Narrowing Of Foodpipe (Verengung der speiserohre) (I assume they mean windpipe) which would indicate asthma. He was first treated in mid 1941 which also coincides with his posting away from Art.Rgt 116(mot.)

From what I see there, he was hospitalised 18.4.1941 until 1.6.1941 in Reserve Hospital I Prag with a carbuncle.

From 25.9.1943 until at least 22.7.1944 he was in numerous hospitals with problems due to the narrowing of the esophagus.

Code 19 is other diseases of the respiratory organs, tuberculosis
L52 limited fitness due to an operated condition to the stomach and intestine after an appendix operation!
bedingt K.v. Feld ( K.v. - Kriegsverwendungsfähig) means he was provisionaly fit for active duty in the field.

The right hand column bears remarks, mostly about transfer to the next hospital. 26.6.1944 he was transferred to an Officers Course in Freiwaldau only to be hospitalised again on the same day in Freiwaldau. Could be that he was able to attend the course whilst having a daily release from hospital

From 22.7.1944 he was found fit for the Ersatz Truppen - Replacement troops only.

Incidentally, here is the photo from a Soldbuch I have....much the same scenario, front line unit with Infanterie Regiment 81, taken ill with stress in 1942, hospitalised for a year and found fit for replacement troop duty only. He then served with Auslade-Kommissar 9, Transportkommandantur Hamburg and Bahnhofs Kommandantur II/186
