    Dog tag

I recently bought a German oval aluminum dog tag at an auction. It is pretty
    corroded but I can make out the following.Front:3. KRAD. E.K. 2302.Back:V. T.
Can anyone tell me what unit this would be? I thought it might be RAD but I
am not sure. The V.T. on the reverse seems odd.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

What you have there could actually be an authentic SS disc- 'SS-Verfuegungstruppe'- shortened sometimes to SS-V.T., was the original name of the Waffen SS. The actual unit is 3. Kradschuetzen (or Kradmelder) Ersatz Kompanie- motorcycle rifle or motorcycle messenger replacement company 3. 2302 is probably the soldier's Stammrollennummer (roster number). If you could post a picture, I could be a little more sure- you're welcom to email me a shot if you can't post it.

A Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) disc would a code only- numbers and sometimes letters- e.g. RAD 7/315/1662 M129.

    Hope this helps.

    Matt

For sure not a RAD tag, as they are stamped quite differently. Using Matt's example, the first number would be the Abteilung, the second the Gruppe and the number after the "M" is code for the registraton office, or the meldeamt (it refers to a place...).

Yours seems to follow proper conventions for a Heer tag though, so post a picture and let us see! =)
