Original South of France Coastal Defense Map

One of these fellas was carrying a very important piece of military intelligence, an offical SECRET (Geheim) classified map of the coastal Antitank defense plans for the 8th company of Grenadier Regiment 765. The map was a topigraphically measured map which included all the installations and fields of fire of heavy, light, and other forms of artillery, finished and planned minefields, supposed directions of allied planned attacks, code named beachheads (I think), etc., etc.

Although I believe the map was of no consequence when these fellows were captured (because of where and when they were captured), I still think that it is very unusal not to have been turned over to allied S-3 personel.

The map is hand drawn on velum, marked GEHEIM in red, and designated for the above unit.

I did a bit of researching and the Bay of Agay is in Southern France, on the Riviera. If you look at a map of the coastline of Southern France you can see it clearly (here is a good link: http://www.francesouthcoast.com/Port/Riviera.html) next to St. Raphael. If you find St. Raphael on this map, the Bay is located just above the "L" of Raphael. If you scroll further to the left and down you will find Toulon, where these guys were taken POW.

It is my belief that the map was good up until the end of September 1944 because of what is noted below the unit designation, below the word Geheim, and maybe that is why it wasn't turned in (because it was no longer any good?), and, seeing that they were captured well away from that defensive sector.

Here is the maps legend of where everything is laid out, such as the heavy flak (8.8), the light flak (2 cm), the minefields etc.

you can see how every hight is numbered and I believe that the different beach heads are code named (Olive, Mandel, Palme).

the "HUMMEL" section is totally surrounded by a mine field.

Any guesses as to why??

I think that a "Deutsche Marine" flak unit was supposed to have been located here but that it didn't happen.

The "9/44" is what I think means the map was good up to, or meant everything noted was "as of", that date.
