    Medical Codes - The Official Solution

    OK, my theory was wrong. A bit of searching in German threw up this official list of Wehrmacht medical codes:

    Official list of Wehrmacht medical codes

    It explains the letters at the top. They have to do with how long (if at all) the defect will render the soldier unfit for service:

    A & B -> kriegsverwendungsfaehig (fit for combat)
    Z -> zeitlich untauglich (temporarily unfit)
    L -> bedingt kriegsverwendungsfaehig (fit for limited duty)
    U -> arbeitsverwendungsfaehig (fit for labour duty)
    vU -> wehruntauglich (unfit for military service)

    Really pleased I stumbled across this.

    PS: That website also includes an enhanced, German-language version of the illness codes (hospital diagnoses):

      Excellent! I never did find out what they meant when I wrote that site nearly three years ago. You will now get an honourable mention in the rewritten version (coming to a computer near you soon).

      Cheers,
      Gary.
