In March 1944 he was duty stationed with the Office of the Feldkommandantur Cherbourg. Then, from 12-16 May 1944, he was a courier for Geheim-Material (secret material) from somewhere via St.-Lô to Paris and then back.
Since he is credited with the Normandy campaign from 6 June to August 1944, he must have been among the few who were allowed to evacuate Cherbourg after the invasion. Because the Cotentin Peninsula was sealed off by 17 or 18 June and Cherbourg taken about 26-27 June. So, if he was still in Cherbourg on 6 June, he must have been one of the lucky few who got out while they could.
