Volksdeutscher were considered German by the SS and therefore could wear the SS runes. Of a side note, even Himmler could be "politically correct" because according to the SS Verordnungsblatt of 1944, he ordered the the Term "Volksdeutscher" no longer be used and instead use "Deutscher aus der Volksgruppe von...( Romania, Hungary, etc.)"

o right jeff I was confusing them with the bosnians, letts and others who wore other, non-rune tabs - except whern they didn't!

btw -and speaking of hungary you reminded me - years ago in a government archive I saw wartime fotos of a uniforomed man wearing an oval patch, upper rt. arm, white lettering on black with large white runes in the middle and within the double ringed "border" (arouind the circumfrence of the patch): SS FREIWILLIGE VOLKSGRUPPE IN UNGARN." very distinctive. don't recall tabs; I think it was jiust a closeup shot.

the images,, on an original wartiume 35mm contact sheet, were made by an SS kreigsberiichter whose name I forget.

I've never seen even a ref. to this patch let alone an actual example - and certainly hope we don't start to see them now!!
